Oracle Java SE Critical Patch Update Advisory - October 2011:

Follow these steps to remove older version of Java components and update to the latest version:
Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment [JRE].
Click the Download JRE button to the right.
Click to enable the box that says:
"Accept License Agreement",the page will then refresh.
Click on the link to download the Windows Offline installation and save to your desktop.
Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.
Go to Start > Control Panel double-click on Add/Remove programs and remove all older versions of Java.
If running Win Vista/Win 7,go to Control Panel > Programs and Features.
Check any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE) in the name.
Click the Remove/Uninstall or Change/Remove button.
Repeat as many times as necessary to remove each Java version.
Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.
Then from your desktop double-click on jre-7u1-windows-i586.exe to install the newest version.
If running Win Vista/Win 7,right click on jre-7u1-windows-i586.exe [jre-7u1-windows-x64.exe if running Vista/Win 7 64bit] and select Run as Administrator.

Verify your installation of Sun Java:

Edit to add: Dont forget to disable Java™ Update Scheduler (jusched.exe) which re-enables itself to autorun @ startup(screeshot attd)...unless of course you WANT it to. I do this by deleting the jusched.exe file with Autoruns, and also uncheck the update box ( set to NEVER) in the Java Control Panel. (javacpl.exe)

There's really no reason to disable the update scheduler. All it does is run once a day to check for an update.

Point taken. My personal preference is to disable ALL auto-updating/checking. YMMV.

Yeah, I understand - I generally like to control what happens on my systems too. It's just that some things are really not only benign but even potentially useful. Either way though, it's certainly up to you as the system owner

Which way is safer to get the update? There is Allen's way as described in first post of this topic, or there is an orange square icon in the task tray with a hover-caption, "java update available". The current java install on the machine now is version 6 build 26. This is the Windows XP sp 3 machine. So which way is safer? The described article of download from Oracle + uninstall java + run the downloaded installer; or just click on the orange icon in the task tray?

There is no "safer". However, if you want to do it the proper way, follow the instructions in my first post.

I am part-way through the process which Allan describes. I noticed on the page with the list of java files, these two:

Not sure what the "s" stands for. It's gotta still be the offline version due to the size.


Version 6u29 doesn't have the "s" one as an option.
