I hope this is the proper place to post this - first I wanted to thank the authors of the Malware removal guide on AV Guard. It worked like a charm and turned a three and a half hour job into an hour or so.
That said, I thought I would throw this out there and see what I could find. After removing this malware from a client's PC, I ultimately did have to do a reformat on it. The virus was successfully removed - Malwarebytes, Windows Malicious Software Removal Tool, and ESET all ran clean scans, but it appears the damage was done.
Before the client gave me the go ahead to wipe, I discovered the follownig damages:
The NIC card was no longer able to aquire a network address
internetexplorer.exe was changed into a hidden file
outlookexpress.exe was changed into a hidden file
After repairing and NIC card driver and getting it up and running again, and finding the now hidden internetexplorer.exe, I attempted to visit the site cnn.com which never dumps their cache - unable to access the site. In fact I was unable to access may sites for various reasons.
After running a windows repair/reinstall, the problems where still present.
I'll ultimately never know if this client's PC had pre-existing conditions or if these were in fact damages caused by AV Guard, but in the end I discovered I should have recomended a reformat right off the bat.
Has anyone else had problems like this? If so, how did you fix?
