When posting your problem, do not run and post a ComboFix log. ComboFix is a tool that should only be run under the supervision of someone who has been trained in its use. Using it on your own can cause problems with your computer. Any posts containing CF Logs will be ignored.

To receive help, you should instead provide a detailed description of your problem, detailed word-for-word error messages that you are receiving, screenshots of strange behaviour, and your operating system. This information is much more useful to our helpers than a ComboFix log.

When I perform a search in Google, the results are displayed as per usual. If I click on any of the results however, the status bar at the bottom says "waiting for marveloussearchsystem.com" and then I get redirected to some other website (usually an e-commerce site). The address bar at the top is the website I requested, but the site displayed most certainly is not.

If I copy the URL indicated in the search result and paste it into the address bar, then the website comes up normally.

Also, if the browser is open about 5 minutes, it will automatically fire up a new tab and launch some website from admirablesearchsystem.com.

This happens in IE9, Safari 5 Chrome 14 and Firefox 7.
It also redirects if I do a search in Bing.

My PC is running Windows 7.

I've run Avira anti-virus (search engine 8.02.06.76, vdf 7.11.15.135) and anti-rootkit and Malwarebytes 1.51.2 release 7882 and found nothing.
I've searched the Registry for marveloussearchsystem and come up empty.

This is only extremely annoying right now, but I'm concerned that it's going to lead to bigger problems.

Has anyone seen this before? Can anybody help?

Thanks
Dave

It appears that there are several threads about this problem on this board. Look for "Google Redirects" and you'll see what I mean. One is from a User running XP, like yourself. The one with the most useful information and a plan of attack seems to be this one: http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/topic422038.html

So, I'm going to try it out this weekend, and I'll let you know how I make out.
If you find out more information, I would appreciate you posting it here, too.

Hello and welcome.

Are you on a router? Are other machines on it,if so are they redirecting?

Do you use Firefox?

Please download MiniToolBox, save it to your desktop and run it.

Checkmark the following checkboxes:
  • Flush DNS
  • Report IE Proxy Settings
  • Reset IE Proxy Settings
  • Report FF Proxy Settings
  • Reset FF Proxy Settings
  • List content of Hosts
  • List IP configuration
  • List Winsock Entries
  • List last 10 Event Viewer log
  • List Installed Programs
  • List Users, Partitions and Memory size.
  • List Minidump Files

Click Go and post the result (Result.txt). A copy of Result.txt will be saved in the same directory the tool is run.

Note: When using "Reset FF Proxy Settings" option Firefox should be closed.

Please follow our Removal Guide here How to remove Google Redirects. You will move to the Automated Removal Instructions

If it finds something make sure Cure is selected
Next click Continue then Reboot now
A log file should be created on your C: drive named "TDSSKiller.txt" please copy and paste the contents in your next reply.

Next run MBAM (MalwareBytes):

Please download Malwarebytes Anti-Malware and save it to your desktop.
MBAM may "make changes to your registry" as part of its disinfection routine. If using other security programs that detect registry changes (ie Spybot's Teatimer), they may interfere or alert you. Temporarily disable such programs or permit them to allow the changes.
  • Make sure you are connected to the Internet.
  • Double-click on mbam-setup.exe to install the application.
For instructions with screenshots, please refer to the How to use Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware Guide.
  • When the installation begins, follow the prompts and do not make any changes to default settings.
  • When installation has finished, make sure you leave both of these checked:
    • Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
    • Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware

  • Then click Finish.
MBAM will automatically start and you will be asked to update the program before performing a scan.
  • If an update is found, the program will automatically update itself. Press the OK button to close that box and continue.
  • If you encounter any problems while downloading the definition updates, manually download them from here and just double-click on mbam-rules.exe to install.
On the Scanner tab:
  • Make sure the "Perform Quick Scan" option is selected.
  • Then click on the Scan button.
  • If asked to select the drives to scan, leave all the drives selected and click on the Start Scan button.
  • The scan will begin and "Scan in progress" will show at the top. It may take some time to complete so please be patient.
  • When the scan is finished, a message box will say "The scan completed successfully. Click 'Show Results' to display all objects found".
  • Click OK to close the message box and continue with the removal process.
Back at the main Scanner screen:
  • Click on the Show Results button to see a list of any malware that was found.
  • Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When removal is completed, a log report will open in Notepad.
  • The log is automatically saved and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
  • Copy and paste the contents of that report in your next reply. Be sure to post the complete log to include the top portion which shows MBAM's database version and your operating system.
  • Exit MBAM when done.
Note: If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be asked to reboot your computer so MBAM can proceed with the disinfection process. If asked to restart the computer, please do so immediately. Failure to reboot normally (not into safe mode) will prevent MBAM from removing all the malware.

@ OldKidOnTheBlock,

I have split out your posts into their own topic here: http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/forums/topic422483.html so as not to confuse things for the original poster in this topic.
