Once you have the volume icon on your taskbar, you can simply click on the icon and select mute.

- Click on the Start button and then Control Panel.
- In the Control Panel double-click on the Sounds and Audio Devices icon.
- Under Device Volume put a checkmark in the checkbox labeled Mute.
