Hi, my laptop has the operating system windows vista and has been running slowly and oddly the last few days so I did a virus scan where Backdoor:Win32/Cycbot.B ws found however it couldn't be removed. I followed the steps in another thread on this forum to remove this virus by downloading Dr Web cureit and MBAM, however when i restarted my laptop to scan using dr web cureit, my laptop shuts itself down around a third of the way into the express scan, this has happened 3 or 4 times. What can i do?

Try running Rkill (http://www.bleepingcomputer.com/download/anti-virus/rkill) and SUPERAntiSpyware (http://www.superantispyware.com/) in this order under safe mode

Also post back the scan log and give an update.

To retrieve the removal information after reboot, launch SUPERAntispyware again.
Click Preferences, then click the Statistics/Logs tab.
Under Scanner Logs, double-click SUPERAntiSpyware Scan Log.
If there are several logs, click the current dated log and press View log.
A text file will open in your default text editor.
Please copy and paste the Scan Log results in your next reply.
Click Close to exit the program.

Thanks for your advice.

However now I can't connect to the Internet on my laptop for some reason. The connection say local only. I have tried in normal mode and in safe mode with networking. Any other suggestions?

Hello RKILL probably will not even help here its for a different siyuation.. Two things though and the first is important..

One or more of the identified infections is a backdoor trojan.

This allows hackers to remotely control your computer, steal critical system information and download and execute files.

I would counsel you to disconnect this PC from the Internet immediately. If you do any banking or other financial transactions on the PC or if it should contain any other sensitive information, please get to a known clean computer and change all passwords where applicable, and it would be wise to contact those same financial institutions to apprise them of your situation.

Though the trojan has been identified and can be killed, because of it's backdoor functionality, your PC is very likely compromised and there is no way to be sure your computer can ever again be trusted. Many experts in the security community believe that once infected with this type of trojan, the best course of action would be a reformat and reinstall of the OS. We can still clean this machine but I can't guarantee that it will be 100% secure afterwards. Let me know what you decide to do.



For the connection try these...

Please click Start > Run, type inetcpl.cpl in the runbox and press enter.
Click the Connections tab and click the LAN settings option.
Verify if "Use a proxy..." is checked, if so, UNcheck it and click OK/OK to exit.
Now check if the internet is working again.

OR

Go to Start ... Run and type in cmd
A dos Window will appear.
Type in the dos window: netsh winsock reset
Click on the enter key.

Reboot your system to complete the process.


This infection changes settings on your computer so that when you launch an executable, a file ending with .exe, it will instead launch the infection rather than the desired program. To fix this we must first download a Registry file that will fix these changes. From a clean computer, please download the following file and save it to a removable media such as a CD/DVD, external Drive, or USB flash drive.

FixNCR.reg

insert the removable device into the infected computer and open the folder the drive letter associated with it. You should now see the FixNCR.reg file that you had downloaded onto it. Double-click on the FixNCR.reg file to fix the Registry on your infected computer.

Thanks for your help.
I have changed the settings like you said through the second method as well as downloading the registry onto a USB drive and opening it onto the infected laptop, however I have had to do all of this in safe mode as whenever I open the computer normally now it just crashes itself and restarts before I can do anything.
What would you suggest as the best course of action?
