That was painful. Defogger required a restart, Gmer crashed my computer outright, and working windows startups are getting increasingly rare. Regardless, I have some logs to show for my evening. Here's hoping they contain something useful.

Wait, what.

I know for a fact that I uninstalled Spybot SD/Teatimer before all this started, and now it's running again in this log. In fact, it's right there on my task bar now.

Is there any chance that these failed system restores have been partially successful, despite the fact that they explicitly tell me that 'no files have been changed'? And would that mean that I have to redo those last few malware scans, in case something got reverted back in?

Mmm, some more info: I've been doing unsuccessfull system restores constantly, not just to test if the problem's gone away, but also because for some barely fathomable reason windows tends to boot normally (instead of the cripplingly slow mode that is my reason for wanting to restore in the first place) after a failed restore. I've been randomly picking restore points from a months' worth of daily saved for this; it's not inconceivable that one of them succeeded without my notice when I was least expecting it. Of course, if that did happen, it clearly did not fix my problem. I'm completely certain that my last three and first five-or-so attempted restores failed, anyway.

Besides those two, I can't think of any reason for why I'm running a program that I uninstalled last friday.

  • Download DDS by sUBs from one of the following links if you no longer have it available. Save it to your desktop.
  • Double click on the DDS icon, allow it to run.
  • A small box will open, with an explanation about the tool. No input is needed, the scan is running.
  • Notepad will open with the results.
  • Follow the instructions that pop up for posting the results.
  • Close the program window, and delete the program from your desktop.
Please note: You may have to disable any script protection running if the scan fails to run. After downloading the tool, disconnect from the internet and disable all antivirus protection. Run the scan, enable your A/V and reconnect to the internet.

We also need a new log from the GMER anti-rootkit Scanner.

Please note that if you are running a 64-bit version of Windows you will not be able to run GMER and you may skip this step.

Please first disable any CD emulation programs using the steps found in this topic:

Then create another GMER log and post it as an attachment to the reply where you post your new DDS log. Instructions on how to properly create a GMER log can be found here:
