BleepingComputer.com: Testend Online/Jemacpv infection?

I have no idea what the name of this virus is or what kind it is. All I know is that it's attempted to access my computer several times, and I'm getting popups randomly as well as google searches being redirected. I'm linking the previous thread for reference, as Broni suggested that I should.

One thing that is probably very important to note is that I had to do an emergency System Restore due to my laptop being unable to start. I lost everything on the laptop, but obviously most of the viruses remained. I removed the most harmful viruses I believe, but this one is annoying and I think it may be adding more viruses to the computer.

We need to see some information about what is happening in your machine. Please perform the following scan again:

• Download DDS by sUBs from one of the following links if you no longer have it available. Save it to your desktop.
  • DDS.scr
    
  • DDS.pif
  
  
• Double click on the DDS icon, allow it to run.
  
• A small box will open, with an explanation about the tool. No input is needed, the scan is running.
  
• Notepad will open with the results.
  
• Follow the instructions that pop up for posting the results.
  
• Close the program window, and delete the program from your desktop.

Please note: You may have to disable any script protection running if the scan fails to run. After downloading the tool, disconnect from the internet and disable all antivirus protection. Run the scan, enable your A/V and reconnect to the internet.

We also need a new log from the GMER anti-rootkit Scanner.

Please note that if you are running a 64-bit version of Windows you will not be able to run GMER and you may skip this step.

Please first disable any CD emulation programs using the steps found in this topic:

I'm not sure whether or not I run 64 bit or 32 bit, but I ran a GMER scan anyway just in case.

1. I haven't found out much more about this yet, but my laptop also occasionally has trouble starting. The google redirects and the random popups still occur as well.

Ensure you have disabled all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix. If you are prompted to install the Recovery Console, then please do so.

Alright, I can't seem to disable McAfee Security Center or MalwareBytes. I currently have the full version of Malwarebytes so it's supposedly running fulltime protection, not sure whether it needs to be disabled or not.

I went into msconfig using the run command, and unchecked all McAfee startup options and services, which worked.


However, after stage 3 had completed on combofix, I ended up with the BSOD and restarted my computer successfully.











One thing that I should mention is that every time I do a Windows Update (example below) when my computer restarts, I end up having to do startup repair. I may also be missing some of the files the computer started with, including the recycle bin. (I have searched for it, it's not on my desktop nor when I use the search bar)

Could you see if a log was produced? It would be at C:\ComboFix.txt.

Please download the TDSS Rootkit Removing Tool (TDSSKiller.exe) and save it to your Desktop. <-Important!!!

• Double-click on TDSSKiller.exe to run the tool for known TDSS variants.
  Vista/Windows 7 users right-click and select Run As Administrator.
  
• If TDSSKiller does not run, try renaming it.
  
• To do this, right-click on TDSSKiller.exe, select Rename and give it a random name with the .com file extension (i.e. 123abc.com). If you do not see the file extension, please refer to How to change the file extension.
  
• Click the Start Scan button.
  
• Do not use the computer during the scan
  
• If the scan completes with nothing found, click Close to exit.
  
• If malicious objects are found, they will show in the Scan results - Select action for found objects and offer three options.
  
• Ensure Cure (default) is selected, then click Continue > Reboot now to finish the cleaning process.
  Note: If Cure is not an option, Skip instead, do not choose Delete unless instructed.
  
• A log file named TDSSKiller_version_date_time_log.txt (i.e. TDSSKiller.2.4.0.0_27.07.2010_09.o7.26_log.txt) will be created and saved to the root directory (usually Local Disk C:).
  
• Copy and paste the contents of that file in your next reply.

Hello, after using the rootkit removal tool, finding one problem, and curing it, it asked for a restart. I pressed ok, but it wouldn't start up and wanted to run a startup repair. This was about 6 hours ago, but the startup repair has failed each time I've tried it. System restores have also failed.

My connection to the internet is incredibly spotty lately, would the startup repair work if I were to go to a place with better connection? My connection is currently working about 1/8th of the times that I try and stays up for 1-2 minutes before going down for 15-20 minutes. We just got a new router/modem and phone/alarm filters which may be affecting the connection. Having a repairman come in on Monday.

Anyway, should I just take my computer in for repair? I'm wondering if part of this might be a hardware problem or something.

We'll go through the options one step at a time. Some of these steps you may have (directly or indirectly) done already, but if we do this one step at a time we will hopefully be able to get you up and running.

Access Window Recovery Environment

• Turn your PC on, as it boots keep tapping the F8 key.
  
• A black screen with boot options should appear.
  
• Select the Repair your computer option (let me know if it isn't present).
  
• A few screens will appear, enter your administrator username and password if requested.
  
• Choose Startup Repair.
  
• Reboot and see if you can start in normal mode.

My computer actually always boots with boot options. Anyway, the two options were

"Launch Startup Repair (Recommended)"
and
"Start Windows Normally".


Startup repair failed to find the problem, and rebooting normally just went back to startup repair as usual

Did you do the F8 tapping? That screen sounds as though Windows knew that your last session didn't load properly and so gave you that option.
