Hi again -
Please note that we that have posted, or nobody else here thinks that you are being silly and that you do not understand.
I have even asked one of the experts to look at this, and they are sure that the advised steps were correct so far.

Note that techsupp has posted the same link that I left earlier from Microsoft and these are the usual methods that we give.

Have you used this method yet ?
Use the hidden $NtServicePackUninstall$ folder loadTOCNode(2, 'moreinformation');
  • Click Start, click Run, type c:\windows\$NtServicePackUninstall$\spuninst\spuninst.exe in the Open box, and then click OK.
  • When the Windows XP Service Pack 3 Removal Wizard starts, click Next.
  • Follow the instructions on the screen to remove Windows XP SP3.
If this fails please now read on -
Do you have a XP CD and do you know what version it is (SP1 , SP2 , SP3) or was this purchased preinstalled.
We can run several checks if you do have the CD, or another CD to match. I have also failed to ask if this is XP Pro or XP Home version.

    Thank You.
EDIT - Sorry I just read it was XP Pro version

My apologies to you and thankyou for all your help so far . Something wrong with my install or something became corrupted maybe? Tried the spuninst the other day and it said file not found then sp3 was not uninstalled. I need to fix a problem with cd rom it says - disc not recognized . Maybe just change the drive . I know the disc is okay as it works in the other machine I do believe it is not sp3 so that would be good ? Yes? Windows has always done this to me with the cd on every pc i had at some point . Should I prcceed with changing the cd drive? Thanks again :thumbup2:
Post Script: ah ! the one on this pc is sata I have only got the old type (atpi ?)

OK -
2 things that I am not sure you if you have done yet - - You must have the same CD as the operating system, XP Pro. - SP2 or 3 will not matter.
First - Click on Start > Run > Then type, or copy / paste sfc /scannow and click OK or press Enter - Insert the CD and this will check the disc for File errors.

Next have you ever run chkdsk /r - The same method as above but a few minor changes.
Click Start > Click on My Computer > Right click on your hard drive > Click on Properties > Tools > Select Error Checking and tick both boxes.
Now Restart your computer. This will take about an hour or so. and gives you plenty of time to have a cuppa while the program runs.

Let me know how these go -
Thanks -

This is only an extra, if the problem seems to be not improving with any of our help. I often use this if I cannot solve my own problems.
Please do not take this as passing you off in any way, but if you wish to contact Microsoft Support for any of these issues the link below leads to their help.

http://support.microsoft.com/oas/default.aspx?Gprid=1173
This is the link for XP , then you select your version (Home, Pro, etc).
Note that the service is free, but the speed of reply depends on how busy they are at any time.

If you want to stay with us there are other things we will try for you.

Thank You -
