The recovery disc I used only works on Compaq computers using a certain motherboard.

Is that a Floppy Disk or a CD disk?

You could also try out this Free Program, not really sure it will work on Original WIN98, but try it? It gives a bluePrint of the System, including the access Number you need. Worth a try?

You can also legally download a ISO File of ANY Windows OS but not Access Codes. That is Taboo here to even discuss.

Ray.

That disc is a CD. In any other computer, the recovery program will not run.

The other computer was used as a company laptop before it was given to me. I didn't want to use the original license, but I might not be able to find an unused license for 98SE.

I found a 98SE ISO file, but I don't know if it has been modified illegally. I tried running it in a virtual machine, but it was extremely slow and completely unusable. How can I determine if this copy of Windows is an illegal hack?

It doesn't really matter with Win9x\ME which serial you use providing its valid, there are no checks done with Microsoft. There is a number shower app you can download but we can't really talk about that on here?

Can I activate Windows using the same product key and a different name and company?

When I find a blank CD or a CD-RW with no critical files on it, I will burn this image to a disc and install it. It doesn't look like a hacked version.

Just try it out, Mate.

Sorry we can't be more specific, no one wants to go against the Rules of BC.

I already have the product key and registration information. I am currently backing up files.

Edit: The disc icon in My Computer is a pig. That doesn't seem right.

I just finished reinstalling Windows. I will have to see if this problem occurs again.

I haven't moved or modified enough files to know if the problem has been resolved. I only copied files from the backup.

Please keep us informed?

I am also unable to record audio through the line-in jack using Audacity. When I try to record, there are portions of the audio missing. Every few seconds, a half-second portion of the audio will be missing.

Edit: It looks like the hard drive is failing. The SMART data shows 7 reallocated sectors and I can't defragment the drive.
