How make file smaller to fit on one DVD

I want to copy a film onto one single-sided dvd , but the file is too large.

The mpg file is 4.6 gb , which is just too large for a DVD.

I dont mind losing a small bit of quality to save on buying double layered dvd's.

I usually use AVSto DVD to creat my mpg files from AVI, then IMGBurn to copy to DVD.

I think DVD shrink may help ? But not sure how to create the right type of file ?

DVD size is have various size depends on what DVD type that you use.
In this case I think you need to buy another Blank DVD that have space over than 4.6 GB.

You should be able to use DVD Flick to shrink the file, and convert it to DVD format, suitable for burning to disk.

Thanks guys.

For anybody looking at this thread for clues on what to do , I have ended up doing the following .

Using AVStoDVD :

Captured file in AVI format .
Created a mpg file (Output - muxed mpeg2 file )
Output to 'DVD folder structure' - AND in the 'settings' 'video' unticked the option keep mpeg2 compliant .

This created a mpg file that fits a normal 4.7gb DVD.

For some reason when I tried to Burn that file to DVD using AVStoDVD, it did the encoding , but never burnt the disk. So Ive eneded up with another step , by changing the Output to 'DVD structure' , then burning those files.
