Hello all,
this is the first time that I have ever written on such a board. I am a complete novice when it comes to the computer but I thought with the help of the internet I could reinstall xp.

Out of the blue, I got a malware (I think) virus...Bundespolizei and the only option for getting rid of it was to reboot the whole thing. My computer is a little Samsung N10.

Originally someone had made two partitions and I had to select one (C wasn't it the first time around). I rebooted the whole thing again and found out now that I am not able to access safe mode and if I put the usb stick in to access the xp download....it goes straight to the opening page Windows page but in safe mode only.

Have I destroyed my hard-drive beyond repair? Can I fix it or should I just take it to someone who really knows what they are doing?

Any help would be gratefully appreciated.

Elizabeth

I'm a bit confused. Are you trying to reinstall Windows or repair it?

And what does this mean? "if I put the usb stick in to access the xp download"

Also is this a brand name computer or home built. If so make and model, etc. Are you using a recovery partition or setup disk from the manufacturer or an original hologram disk from Microsoft?

Also, also do you back up your personal files and if so do you have a current backup?

I just realized you provided a model but I need more information. When I go to the Samsung website I am presented with this...

When I further choose a model name, say NP-NC10, I am presented with this...

So, can you look on the bottom of the netbook and give us a bit more information about your exact model. Is this a U.S. model or are you in other parts of the world?

The model of my netbook is NP-NC10-KA01DE. I live in Germany and bought the netbook here. When I bought the computer a few years ago, the only software that I received with it was a Samsung copied disk for Ultra Cost PCs
SP3!!! There was no Windows Disk. A friend copied the disk onto a usb stick and reinstalled everything 18 months ago as I also was infected by the 'log on-log off' virus. The only protection that I have been using is the free Avira download....obviously that isn't enough, even though I thought I was very careful!!

With the help of the stick, I reinstalled XP but found that it would only work if it was running with the stick in the computer. During the installation I saw that there were two partitions, C and E with about the same amount of space on them. I used the C. I then repeated the procedure and this time used the E partition....and this is the mess that I am in!!

Download the manual for your model here: NP-NC10_XP_Manual_v2.4_eng.exe (It's a Flash application, not a PDF)

Go to appendix, Reinstalling Windows XP and Using Samsung Recovery Solution (Optional)

With the help of the stick, I reinstalled XP but found that it would only work if it was running with the stick in the computer.

That's because during setup it sees the USB stick as a valid drive and puts the boot file there. I honestly don't have experience with this but the folks at MSFN.org have a whole section devoted to installing from USB. They might be able to tell you how to cure that. Maybe somebody here knows also.

I want to thank'X' for taking the time to reply to my problem. I have taken my computer to a specialist (should have done that in the first place!!) and now it is running like new...yeh.
