Re-Run aswMBR

  • Click Scan
  • On completion of the scan, click the FIXMBR button
  • There is a slight pause after clicking the 'Fix' button.
  • Wait for the tool to report 'Infection fixed successfully', now reboot the machine.
  • Rebooting the machine prematurely, before seeing this line will result in an incomplete fix.

Note:After the 'Infection fixed successfully' message appears, the machine may became unresponsive. You may have to do a hard boot of your machine. That may be a side effect from the fix. All will be well after the reboot.

  • Save the log as before and post in your next reply.

I will be online from 5-31 to 6-4 in a very limited amount

Ok, only way to clicked on fixMBR was to do it BEFORE the scan finished. As soon as the "Scan" finish the FixMBR gets grayed out.

So I did it. It gave me a warning, pressed "OK". Message popped out saying that "the machine must be restarted to finish the cleanup". Meanwhile the Scan continued on the background.

I let the scan to be completed and clicked yes, to restart the machine.

First thing I notice is that when it's going to even start loading windows it shows me the menu to select if I want to do it on "safe mode", "safe mode with networking", etc... like if I would have pulled the plug on the computer without shutting down.

After that... NOTHING CHANGED.....I'm still having the same redirection attempts all the time...the automatic ones are caught by MBAM (paid license now), the ones after a searches in google are sometime blocked and some other times are not.

It may seem that the problem is indeed on my MBR, but the problem now is how to clean it. I'm one inch away from going the format route. Only thing stopping me is that I do not know for sure if the virus is allocated in any other file on my backups. So IT would be a royal pain in the back to format HD, and MBR and re-install EVERYTHING to get the infection right back

PLEASE HELP!!!!

Try this please. You will need a USB drive.

Download http://unetbootin.sourceforge.net/unetbootin-xpud-windows-latest.exe & http://noahdfear.net/downloads/bootable/xPUD/xpud-0.9.2.iso to the desktop of your clean computer
  • Insert your USB drive
  • Press Start > My Computer > right click your USB drive > choose Format > Quick format
  • Double click the unetbootin-xpud-windows-387.exe that you just downloaded
  • Press Run then OK
  • Select the DiskImage option then click the browse button located on the right side of the textbox field.
  • Browse to and select the xpud-0.9.2.iso file you downloaded
  • Verify the correct drive letter is selected for your USB device then click OK
  • It will install a little bootable OS on your USB device
  • Once the files have been written to the device you will be prompted to reboot ~ do not reboot and instead just Exit the UNetbootin interface
  • After it has completed do not choose to reboot the clean computer simply close the installer
  • Next download http://noahdfear.net/downloads/driver.sh to your USB
  • Remove the USB and insert it in the sick computer
  • Boot the Sick computer
  • Press F12 and choose to boot from the USB
  • Follow the prompts
  • A Welcome to xPUD screen will appear
  • Press File
  • Expand mnt
  • sda1,2...usually corresponds to your HDD
  • sdb1 is likely your USB
  • Click on the folder that represents your USB drive (sdb1 ?)
  • Confirm that you see driver.sh that you downloaded there
  • Press Tool at the top
  • Choose Open Terminal
  • Type bash driver.sh
  • Press Enter
  • After it has finished a report will be located on your USB drive named report.txt
  • Remove the USB drive and insert back in your working computer and navigate to report.txt

Please note - all text entries are case sensitive
Copy and paste the report.txt for my review
I will be online from 5-31 to 6-4 in a very limited amount

everything went to hell. I CAN'T boot now... When windows is going to start loading I get a black screen saying that there was a problem with windows boot loader, and to insert the original Win 7 cd on the drive and follow the instructions. It says that a change on hardware or software could produce this error.
Apparently my MBR does not have the files win7 is looking for.

Do not have disk with me, it's at the office!!!.

So it seems I'm out of luck for today. unless you can recommend anything else.

I used the testdisk exactly as the instructions directed me and it did exactly what the explanation said.... Why is not booting?? I do not know

I do not if its important... but here is what the black screen says
Windows Boot Manager
Windows failed to start. A recent hardware or software change might be the cause. To fix the problem:
1- insert windows installation disk
2- chose language
3- click repair

Status: 0xc000000e
Info: The boot selection failed because a required device is inaccesible

System Recovery Environment

To access the System Recovery Environment in Windows 7, simply boot your PC,

  • just before the system loads the Windows operating system, hit the [F8] Function 8 key on your keyboard which will launch the Advanced Boot Options menu.

  • There you will see a new option 'Repair Your Computer', select this option and hit 'Enter' on your keyboard.

  • Now, from the System Recovery Options dialog, select the "Operating System" you want to repair, then click Next:

  • From the "Choose a Recovery Tool" dialog menu, select "Command Prompt":

  • Type the following into the "Command Prompt Window": and press enter

      bootrec.exe /fixmbr

If you have problems booting the computer after you have run that command boot back into the System Recovery Environment and Type the following into the "Command Prompt Window": and press enter

    bootrec.exe /fixboot

Sorry, the boot issue was worst than what I thought. All the common solutions to recover the MBR like the one you provided and widely available in the internet, did not work.
I had 2 Win 7 CDs. The one I used to install in my PC, would not get to the recovery console, NO MATER WHAT...NO WAY JOSE, NO, NOTHING, NADA, ETC....

When I tried to use the other disk, it would get to the recovery console but at one point it would tell me that the cd and the install were not compatible or something like that.

I tried everything I could, I create recovery disks from other win7 machine, I installed win7 in another disk on the same machine and created recovery disk from tat one, nothing worked.

I can't be without computer any longer due to work needs and after so many tries, at one point, the win7s disk would not even recognize the MBR.

I believe that the rootkit was in fact in the MBR, I wish I could get some feedback from you, but I understand that you are helping several people like me for free.

What I did was to make a MS-DOS 6.22 boot USB drive. Boot from there, fdisk /mbr, format, reinstalled win 7 and left it running to go to sleep.

I still do not know where the infection came from and if is still in other files on my backup files (other than the ones from windows and my c: drive). That's the only thing that has me concerned.
The fact that my AV McAfee, and malwarebytes antimalware could not find the infection, also has me worried.

But I will post back tonight after I install some more stuff and see if I'm still getting re-directed.

Is there any way that you could tell me where (other than the MBR) would this rootkit hide??? .exe? any other files extensions? How could I protect my MBR from being modified?

Hello

This infection only hides in the MBR so once you get that cleared or replaced it is good to go
