Hello all. I have recently come into some trouble with my parents' PC. At first, it was just giving them a BSOD with DRIVER_IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL. Then about an hour later, it just wouldn't start anymore. I tried restoring to an earlier restore point before this, but that never finished for some reason. After that, the hard drive wouldn't show up on the BIOS; at that point I was sure it was the HDD. However, now when I try to boot it up, it doesn't bring anything up on the monitor. No beeps are heard either. Any ideas what is wrong?

Nothing. It doesn't wake up from sleep mode.

Hold on. Are we talking about booting up or sleep mode?

Sorry for the misunderstanding. I meant the monitor doesn't wake up from sleep when I power on the PC.

That's not sleep.

So when you boot the system there is no image on the display? It's probably one of three things:

1) The display itself. Try a different one.
2) The video card - try a different one.
3) The cable(s) between the video card and the display - try different cables.

It says going to sleep mode so I assumed it was.

It's neither one nor two. I have my laptop hooked up to the display currently. The video card is integrated so I don't really know how to handle that situation; I don't have another one either.

Okay, you're explaining in bits and pieces. WHAT says it''s going to sleep? Please explain EXACTLY what is going on IN DETAIL.

It's the display that says it's asleep when there is no picture. That's not the problem, though.

Please supply some information about the system including make and model if a "brand name" one. How old is the PC? What OS is installed? etc.

Have you taken the side off the box and checked inside? How many fans, and what is their location? Is the fan on the the CPU heatsink spinning when you press the ON button ... and does it remain spinning until you turn off the power?

Edit: Please describe exactly what you notice happening (everything) after you press the ON button.

It's an HP a6720y. It's about 2 years old and has Vista installed.

I have checked inside and all of the fans are spinning when the power button is pressed. The fans remain spinning until the PC is powered off.

I press the power button, and the fans spin normally. That's about it. Nothing else happens. No beeps. No image.

I take it that normally you would see lights active on both the keyboard and the tower, but now they do not illuminate at all either?

Disconnect all external devices, and everything that is not necessary for the computer to start.

Try unplugging/re-plugging everything: Pay particular attention to all power supply cables/connections. This will "renew" any contacts that may have become less-than-good. Any improvement?

The problem could be with either the power supply unit or the motherboard. One way to eliminate the power supply unit is to try a known good one and see if it is any different (if you don't have a spare lying about, you may need to "borrow" one, perhaps from another working computer?). The motherboard likewise ... but it is not likely that you will have access to a spare one to try, so that is more difficult to diagnose/eliminate.
