How to find out your IP address and other TCP/IP Settings in Windows

Guide Overview

This guide will teach you how to determine what your IP address is as well as other TCP/IP Settings. This guide will cover steps for all versions of Windows.

Instructions for Windows 95, 98, 98SE, and ME
  1. Click on the Start button.

  2. Click on the Run menu option.

  3. In the Open: field type the following winipcfg.exe and press the OK button.

  4. When Winipcfg.exe starts it will display your IP Address, your subnet mask, and your Default Gateway. To get more information such as DNS servers and WINS server you can click on the More Info button.
Instructions for Windows 2000, XP, 2003, Vista
  1. Click on the Start button.

  2. Click on the Run menu option.

  3. In the Open: field type the following cmd and press the OK button.

  4. A console window will open (black window). In the console window type ipconfig and press enter. You will now see the IP Address, Subnet Mask, and Default Gateway for each active network connection in your computer. If you want to see more detail about each connection, such as DNS Servers or WINS Servers, you can type ipconfig /all and press enter.

You need to have the following info or steps completed:

1. Remote desktop enabled on your xp computer
2. Know the ip address of your xp computer
3. Make sure no firewall is blocking tcp/udp port 3389 on your XP computer

Then you just need to download the remote desktop client to your windows 2000 computer, install it, run it, and input the ip address from above and press connect.

The client can be downloaded from here:

The only way to tell is to check your firewall/router config or test it from outside.
