BleepingComputer.com: HijackThis Log: Please help Diagnose

So this all started almost 3 weeks ago, I started to get svchost errors, and desktop background crashes, then explorer crashes, then I lost sound because the driver was turned off, and my internet connection disappears.

I proceeded to do my normal investigation with scans and checking files, but I found nothing so then I thought maybe a hardware failure. So I have been trying to diagnose that and coming up short.

Then on August 18th, my AVG updated its antivirus database, and just like that I started getting warnings of a trojan, and blocking of rootkit access. So I now turn here for some help, I am new to interpreting the Hijack this log and I am not sure what to look for, my gut is telling me I got something on the computer, but my knowledge of what to look for has run out. So here we go, let me know what you guys think -

We need to see some information about what is happening in your machine. Please perform the following scan again:

• Download DDS by sUBs from one of the following links if you no longer have it available. Save it to your desktop.
  • DDS.scr
    
  • DDS.pif
  
  
• Double click on the DDS icon, allow it to run.
  
• A small box will open, with an explanation about the tool. No input is needed, the scan is running.
  
• Notepad will open with the results.
  
• Follow the instructions that pop up for posting the results.
  
• Close the program window, and delete the program from your desktop.

Please note: You may have to disable any script protection running if the scan fails to run. After downloading the tool, disconnect from the internet and disable all antivirus protection. Run the scan, enable your A/V and reconnect to the internet.

We also need a new log from the GMER anti-rootkit Scanner.

Please note that if you are running a 64-bit version of Windows you will not be able to run GMER and you may skip this step.

I apologize for the delay in replying to your post, but this forum is extremely busy.

Please Track this topic - On the top right on this tread, click on the Option button, and, in the drop-down list, click on 'Track this topic'. Under Subscription Information, click on 'Immediate Email Notification' and then click on the Proceed button at the bottom.

Do Not make any changes on your own to the infected computer.

Please set your system to show all files.
Click Start, open My Computer, select the Tools menu and click Folder Options.
Select the View Tab. Under the Hidden files and folders heading, select Show hidden files and folders.
Uncheck: Hide file extensions for known file types
Uncheck the Hide protected operating system files (recommended) option.
Click Yes to confirm.

Thank you for the logs. They did show some problems and one was a backdoor trojan. A backdoor trojan allows hackers to remotely control your computer, steal critical system information and download and execute files.

I would counsel you to disconnect this PC from the Internet immediately. If you do any banking or other financial transactions on the PC or if it should contain any other sensitive information, please get to a known clean computer and change all passwords where applicable, and it would be wise to contact those same financial institutions to apprise them of your situation.

Though the trojan has been identified and can be killed, because of it's backdoor functionality, your PC is very likely compromised and there is no way to be sure your computer can ever again be trusted. Many experts in the security community believe that once infected with this type of trojan, the best course of action would be a reformat and reinstall of the OS. Please read these for more information:

We can still clean this machine but I can't guarantee that it will be 100% secure afterwards. Let me know what you decide to do.

If you decide to continue with the cleanup -

First, please download the TDSS Rootkit Removing Tool (TDSSKiller.exe) and save it to your Desktop. <-Important!!!
Be sure to download TDSSKiller.exe (v2.5.8.0) from Kaspersky's website.

• Double-click on TDSSKiller.exe to run the tool for known TDSS variants.
  Vista/Windows 7 users right-click and select Run As Administrator.
  
• If TDSSKiller does not run, try renaming it.
  
  To do this, right-click on TDSSKiller.exe, select Rename and give it a random name with the .com file extension (i.e. 123abc.com). If you do not see the file extension, please refer to How to change the file extension.
  
  
• Click the Start Scan button.
  
• Do not use the computer during the scan
  
• If the scan completes with nothing found, click Close to exit.
  
• If malicious objects are found, they will show in the Scan results - Select action for found objects and offer three options.
  
• Ensure Cure (default) is selected, then click Continue > Reboot now to finish the cleaning process.
  
• A log file named TDSSKiller_version_date_time_log.txt (i.e. C:\TDSSKiller.2.5.0_23.07.2010_15.31.43_log.txt) will be created and saved to the root directory (usually Local Disk C:).
  
• Copy and paste the contents of that file in your next reply.

Next, download Combofix from either of the links below, and save it to your desktop. For information regarding this download, please visit this webpage: how-to-use-combofix

1. Close any open browsers.
2. Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.


Double click on combofix.exe & follow the prompts.

• When finished, it will produce a report for you.
  
• Please copy the "C:\ComboFix.txt" into your reply.

Note:
Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it's running. That may cause it to stall

Once you have the above report, click on the Add Reply button below, copy in the contents of the above report. Also include any comments that you might have concerning the infection(s) and the infected computer.

Thanks for the reply and help Shannon, I knew I had something. I have no issues reformatting the computer, I am going through and changing all my finacial and critical passwords today from a clean pc.

Do you recommend cleaning the system as mush as we can, then reinstalling?
I have some important files and documents I need to save, but I am concerned that they may be corrupted now, and would hate to reinfect my pc after reistalling windows.

Hi-

Reformatting will clean the system. On backing up data files, the safest practice is not to
backup any executable files (*.exe), screensavers (*.scr), autorun (.ini) or script files (.php, .asp, and
.html) files because they may be infected by malware. Avoid backing up compressed files (.zip, .cab, .rar)
that have executable files inside them as some types of malware can penetrate and infect .exe files within
compressed files too. Other types of malware may even disguise itself by adding and hiding its extension to
the existing extension of file(s) so be sure you look closely at the full file name. After reformatting, scan
the backed up data with your anti-virus prior to to copying it back to your hard drive.
