I have a Compac Presario 2100 when i attempt to start up it give a message that the <Windows>\system 32\ntoskrnl.exe file is missing or corrupt. Best Buy sold me the laptop and I do not have the original software on CDs. How can I get the required file restored when I can not even get the blasted thing to run?

Can you borrow an original XP cd from someone?
If you can, the solution is to boot from the cd. Then run the recovery console.
From the recovery console command prompt type

bootcfg /rebuild

Take the cd out & see if it boots.
I just did this on a system today & it booted fine afterwards
In the beginning there was the command line.
