Okay, so I'm behind the times.

But maybe the upside is that the resolution to my issue has long ago been hashed out and is ready to be cyber-delivered to me in very short order!

Issue: FILE SHARING NOT ACHIEVED
Setup: Home small networking

Desktop: Dell 3000 WinXP Pro SP3 with current updates.
Internet connection: Dial-up (GASP!) (usually 45.2 bps)
Firewall: PC Tools Firewall Plus ... but DISABLED, of necessity for enabling Internet sharing.
*Firewall active*: Microsoft


Router: BEFSR41-V3 Four ports and Internet port.
Reset for this newly assembled network.
DMZ contains the Local IP to disable NAT: 192.168.1.1


Laptops: Sony Vaio SZ series WinXP Pro SP3 with current updates.
Internet connection: Shared from Dell Desktop via Ethernet. -- Successful
Firewall active: Microsoft

Sony Vaio SZ series Vista Business SP2 with current updates.
Internet connection: Shared from Dell Desktop via Ethernet. -- Successful
Firewall active: PC Tools Firewall Plus


Active on all three computers:

Guest User Account
Client for Microsft Networks
File and Printer sharing for Microsoft Networks

Respective folders are configured for sharing with 'everyone.'



"Microsoft TCP/IP version 6" is listed in the Local Area Connection Properties" list of:

One of the laptops (WinXP Pro, the one with only Vers. 4 of TCP/IP listed) can "see" a shared folder on the other laptop (Vista Business). It cannot be accessed; its "network path is not found."

I have scanned various forums on file-sharing with XP Pro and found mentioned that the firewalls of the computers, whose files are desired to be shared, must be disabled. I have disabled ALL FIREWALLS on all three computers to test if the issue would be resolved. IT HAS NOT.

What is the magic password? Am I missing the incantation? SA-MAN-THA!!

Are the configurations of the Local Area Connection Properties needing to be tweaked? ( ... a-hem .. 'again'?) Do I need to uninstall and reconstruct the TCP/IP protocol on the Laptop WinXP Pro in order to bring up the Version 6 architecture?

Or should Comrade Gates be duly flogged?

A quick addendum:

I can enter the router setup via either of the two laptops, but I get a Connection Time-out page when trying to access it through the Dell Desktop (which delivers the internet signal to the router). Firewall on or off, it makes no difference; the router setup is inaccessible through the Dell Desktop.

Also ... of course I meant "kbps" ...

If I understand correctly all of the computers can access the internet but they can not access each others shared folders?

Yes, that is correct.

To add a lil' more spice, I've decided to downgrade the Vista Business machine to Win XP Pro (after 11 months of using the prissy, delicate, finicky 'Vista'). I'd have done it by today, but the CD I'd been provided by Sony many moons ago proved to be defective. I'm awaiting a replacement downgrade CD.

Ya know ... it occurs to me that, being the newbie that I am, I might not have configured folders correctly for sharing.

After all, so much of what I do (and consequently learn from) amounts to so many stabs in the dark.

Perhaps someone could outline the steps that, under these circumstances, I would have been expected to take to achieve optimum folder sharing?

Typically you will not get a response from the router using the dell machine if it is hooked into the WAN port. This is by design to protect the computers on the LAN side from internet attacks.

In the properties of your network connextion on each computer make sure the file and printer sharing for windows is installed and enabled.
