Laptop infection, that is.
Actually - that makes it sound just as bad.
PC infection.
She's on XP Home - I've managed to isolate the service that was causing the problem and at some point have renamed its directory to "ddd". Now, windows won't stay logged on, which suggests that whatever was in there has replaced "userinit.exe" in the registry. I need to edit the registry to set it back. I'm getting a BSoD when trying to get in via safe mode, and the immediate logout thing with my wife's account and "guest".
All I have access to for the next five or six days is a USB drive enclosure which I can use to get my wife's HDD connected to my own Win7 home laptop.
Should I wait 'til we're back from hols (and I can download BartPE or whatever without the cr*ppy mobile tethering) or is there something I can do here with the hardware I have to hand?
I can do a virus scan on the USB-attached HDD, but it won't fix userinit in her registry.
