Good afternoon everyone,

This topic has certainly generated a lot of lively responses!

One other consideration with regard to the "Howsecureismypassword" site, is that it states the results are the time it would take a single hacker using a single desktop computer to crack one's password.

While there are indeed lone, individual hackers out there, what about the GROUPS of hackers using multiple, highly-automated, computers at the same time to attempt and crack a password?

Wouldn't this scenario logically present the possibility of a password being cracked much sooner than what the password strength checker states?

Just a thought.

Such a team could only reduce the processing time by a constant factor. For example if they could put 10 computers on it and manage it efficiently, they could crack it in 1/10 of the time. In the same way if you change the speed of the machine, or the time taken to process a password guess, etc you'd change it (in one direction or the other) by a constant factor. More importantly if guess limits (5 wrong guesses and you're locked out for an hour) come into play then the time taken increases drastically. Really that site is only providing a general estimate.

Mind you, those passwords that are orders of magnitude older than the universe itself are probably quite safe until the quantum revolution.

Quite right, JosiahK!

Besides...I wasn't planning on being around when the revolution occurs!
