I'll summarize the effects of the virus here for you. A dialog box will pop up on the screen with one of the following messages and will reopen in less than a minute if closed:
- "Your computer is infected with Spyware! Detected malicious programs can damage your computer and compromise your privacy. It is strongly recomended to remove them immediately."
- "Surfing without protection tool installed may cause spyware intrusion through security holes in the Web browser or in other software."
- "Internal software conflict detected! Some application tries to get access to system kernel (such behavior is typical to Spyware/Malware). It may cause crash of your computer."
Also, a bubble indicated with a yellow caution triangle will pop up from the quick launch toolbar with one of these messages; these will continue to open (no more than two active at a time) and disappear as soon as they are moused over:
- "Keep your computer safe from viruses and malicious programs that can slow down or break your system"
- "Spyware protection is disabled. Your personal data is at high risk of being stolen and misused."
The messages persist in Safe Mode with and without Networking. There are no fake anti-virus software popups. When I try to open the Task Manager or Registry Editor they are automatically closed. Apparently I also have the so-called Google Redirect Virus. From prior experience I tried running rkill and MBAM in safe mode, to no avail. At the suggestion of Broni in the Am I Infected? forum, I ran GMER, Rootkit Unhooker, and aswMBR, at which point he sent me here.
Now comes to the matter of the logs. When I run DDS I get the black window that pops up just as in the figure, and then it closes and nothing happens. It says it shouldn't take more than a few minutes but I sat here for a couple hours and still nothing. I had already run Defogger and got no errors or anything, but this showed up in the defogger_disable log:
Checking for services/drivers...
Unable to read sptd.sys
SPTD -> Disabled (Service running -> reboot required)
This sptd.sys has been popping up in a bunch of the logs and makes me suspicious. If it is the culprit it must have restarted itself when I was forced to reboot, and hopefully that's why DDS didn't work.
When I let GMER run the whole scan, it crashed when I clicked the Save button. Since it didn't find anything new after scanning the Registry, I stopped the scan after it had done so and tried to save then. For whatever reason it worked, so the log is attached.
Thanks,
