Which power supply? Our first attempt at a build and not sure how many watts.

Hi there

My 14 year old son and I are building a computer together.

We've decided on these parts:

ASUS Crosshair V Formula Motherboard
AMD Phenom II X6 1100T Black Edition
Corsair Vengeance CMZ8GX3M2A1600C9 8GB (2x4GB) DDR3
Western Digital Green 1TB WD10EARX
Gainward GeForce GTX 560 Ti 2GB Phantom
Thermaltake Level 10 GT Case

I've got a DVD drive to put in it as well. We would also like to put other hard drives in later.
The computer will be used for gaming and editing videos, and a bit of word processing and music.

Can someone please help us to work out how many watts we need for the power supply? We're not sure. :huh:

I would change that hard drive to a faster one because the Green drive are the slower range, something like this would do.

How do you work out how much power it needs? We're planning on building another computer but different, and it would be good to know how to work it out.

Well bascially, that graphics card draws roughly around 200W and roughly 170W for the other components. The way think of it is, if you are gonna use onboard graphics then i would use a 430W or a 500W power supply. 600W and above for dedicated graphics card depending on the card. Also i see you have linked up to PC Case Gear coincidentally i chose the same hard drive and the ram you chose lol.

Haha, I was going to get 2x2G ram but it wasn't compatible with the motherboard, and the one I picked wasn't much more expensive and it's compatible. I think I've spent a bit much though. The case is beautiful (prob should've got a cheaper one)

Huge improvement on what I'm on at the moment...an Acer, 1.5G ram, 256MB graphics lol. But this comp is still trusty, just awfully slow to start (5 mins)and run programs. And it's very picky as to what I can plug into it and successfully use, eg camera, usb sticks etc, without having to reinstall them every time I use them, lol

Thanks for the help with the psu, I got the one you suggested at pccasegear :thumbsup:
