Over the past couple of days I have been doing extensive research, scanning, deleting, rebooting, etc. The past couple of days all blur together as a result, but I believe I began to notice the problem on Tuesday night. I don't recall what happened first, but two odd things started happening to my computer (in no particular order): First, all of my Google searches started becoming redirected, but only for two clicks. After my second click it went to the actual site (eventually it started never going to the proper site). I started trying to use Bing and it worked, but shortly stopped working. Google's automatic fill-in option stopped working and pages were no longer updating as the input changed. Second, some odd anti-virus warning kept popping up. I knew it meant bad news, but didn't know how to dispose of it. It popped up twice, I believe, and I exitted out as quickly as possible both times.
Soon after all of this I started running Spybot S&D (previously installed). The worse thing that kept showing up was something along the lines of "vermitude.dll." I tried deleting it but it kept coming back. I updated S&D, reran, and bunch more things showed up. I deleted them all and it worked, in that they no longer showed up on scans. But the search engine problems persisted. I then did some research. I installed and ran MBAM next, but I don't remember the results (sorry). All I know is that it stopped (or never started) giving results. The problem again remained. So, I used TDSS killer (which I found off of this site). I cured something with it (sorry, don't remember what, but it was only one item), and it has not reappeared upon any subsequent searches.
This all started scaring me, so I attempted to run a back-up onto an external hard-drive using Cobian, before using system restores and other tatics. Unfortunately this seemed to never get started. I turned of Teatimer on S&D, for some reason. And then it started saying "no engine" in Cobian. So, now I have no back-up and no scans showing up anything, but the same problems with the internet. Anyway, I gave up on the back-up and attempted to release my IP address. After renewing it, my searches suddenly started working again. I restarted my computer, and the redirects were, of course, back. I did the same thing to my IP as before, but the redirects sadly remained. I ran one last TDSS scan (nothing found) before turning my laptop off.
In my research I saw that this is a common issue, but also a idiosyncratic one, it seemed. So, I decided to make an account on the site I thought best and hope that someone would be able to help my particular situation. As mentioned, my infected computer is a laptop (using a different computer currently, though). It runs on Vista. It is 32-bit. I use Chrome almost exclusively for my browsing. I hope that I didn't screw anything up with my initial DIY-attitude, and I hope that I have provided enough (and not too much) information for to start off with. Any help is very welcome. Thank you!
