Every time I open an IE window, a little box flashes quickly on the screen and all it says is "preparing to install". How can I find out what on earth it's doing or trying to install & get rid of it forever? Thanks in advance for any help.

Thanks for that, I was able to gain permission to that area through your help. Unfortunately, the problem is still happening. How can I figure out what is 'preparing to install'?

Could be a problem with the Windows Installer, I would try installing the appropriate version of Windows Installer from http://www.microsoft.com/download/en/details.aspx?id=8483 .
"Download the file that is appropriate for your operating system version and platform.
For Windows Vista, Windows Vista Service Pack 1 and Windows Server 2008:
x86 Platform: Windows6.0-KB942288-v2-x86.msu
x64 Platform: Windows6.0-KB942288-v2-x64.msu
IA64 Platform: Windows6.0-KB942288-v2-ia64.msu"
