BleepingComputer.com: Redirect Virus Strikes Again

Several months ago I posted the following topic that started with a bad case of a redirect virus and then led to the download problem mentioned in the linked topic.

Now I have somehow been attacked again by some sort of redirect virus except that now its not in google it only occurs when I go to a secure webpage such as when I am trying to login to my bank account.

Whenever I go to a page that would normally have the little lock up top to indicate a secure page, the lock appears for a moment and then the page refreshes to what appears to be an identical page but without the lock.

This makes me really nervous to do virtually anything online right now.

MSE and MBAM don't pick up anything.

I also must mention that I can't get my computer to install any microsoft updates even when I try to download them directly but my anti-virus software is still updating fine.

You did update MSE and MBAm before you ran it?
P am going with XP here.

When you can get to this site
Please download and install FixWindowsUpdate

After the program is installed, launch it using the desktop shortcut.

Click Phase 1, then Phase 2. Phase 2 will take some time to run.

Once Phase 2 is complete, click Start BITS.

Exit the program and reboot the computer.

Do updates work now?




Your HOSTS file may be infected.

Click Run in the File Download dialog box or save MicrosoftFixit50267.msi to your Desktop and double-click on it to run. Then just follow the promots in the Fix it wizard.

If it finds something make sure Cure is selected
Next click Continue then Reboot now
A log file should be created on your C: drive named "TDSSKiller.txt" please copy and paste the contents in your next reply.

NOTE: In some instances if no malware is found there will be no log produced.

After using Microsoft fix it to replace the hosts file it asked me to restart. During startup a blue screen appears that says windows cannot find the file sys32/autochk skipping autochk then it appears to start normally but now I can't get online It simply says error connecting to the network when I try to repair but it's obviously working still since I can use my iPad to post this

For the connection try these...

Please click Start > Run, type inetcpl.cpl in the runbox and press enter.
Click the Connections tab and click the LAN settings option.
Verify if "Use a proxy..." is checked, if so, UNcheck it and click OK/OK to exit.
Now check if the internet is working again.

OR
Go to Start ... Run and type in cmd
A dos Window will appear.
Type in the dos window: netsh winsock reset
Click on the enter key.

Reboot your system to complete the process.

Still nothing. Same blue screen on startup as well. Its picking up that the signal exists but not connecting. Won't grab onto my neighbors either.

can you do a system restore to a couple days ago?

Ok I restored everything and got back connected.

I completed all the steps except for the first one. When I click start bits it gives me an error saying that bits is already running.

But other than that things went fine. The redirect remover worked and MBAM did not find anything after the reboot.

I also installed the AutoRuns thing to try to cleanup my startup so that things will move a little faster. There is a ton of stuff in there and a lot of the ones I thought were odd and searched in the list aren't there. Can you direct me on how to go from here to get that straightened out as well?

Post that list in XP.. They know thise files better than I.

Go into Control Panel and uninstall any tool bars and Registry Cleaners as they do more harm than good.

Now you should Create a New Restore Point to prevent possible reinfection from an old one. Some of the malware you picked up could have been saved in System Restore. Since this is a protected directory your tools cannot access to delete these files, they sometimes can reinfect your system if you accidentally use an old restore point. Setting a new restore point AFTER cleaning your system will help prevent this and enable your computer to "roll-back" to a clean working state.

The easiest and safest way to do this is:

• Go to Start > Programs > Accessories > System Tools and click "System Restore".
  
• Choose the radio button marked "Create a Restore Point" on the first screen then click "Next". Give the R.P. a name, then click "Create". The new point will be stamped with the current date and time. Keep a log of this so you can find it easily should you need to use System Restore.

• Then use Disk Cleanup to remove all but the most recently created Restore Point.
  
• Go to Start > Run and type: Cleanmgr
  
• Click "Ok". Disk Cleanup will scan your files for several minutes, then open.
  
• Click the "More Options" tab, then click the "Clean up" button under System Restore.
  
• Click Ok. You will be prompted with "Are you sure you want to delete all but the most recent restore point?"
  
• Click Yes, then click Ok.
  
• Click Yes again when prompted with "Are you sure you want to perform these actions?"
  
• Disk Cleanup will remove the files and close automatically.

I am still having trouble updating windows.

Also I tried to disable autorun via the the tutorial method but the correct folder in the group edit window is not there. Is there another method?

This does not work here is the message I get back.

"Error while starting BITs. The problem was not fixed or BITS is already running."

Ive tried twice and get the same message.

Updates still are broken afterwards.

Let's rerun MBAM (MalwareBytes) FULL:

Open MBAM in normal mode and click Update tab, select Check for Updates,when done
click Scanner tab,select FULL scan and scan (normal mode).
After scan click Remove Selected, Post new scan log and Reboot into normal mode.

Full Scan finds nothing
