Laptop only accepts 2-3 USBs

Hi,

Attached to my laptop I have a mouse and a keyboard. If I try to plug anything else in (external hard drive, printer etc) it will start loosing some of the connections (usually no more than 3, sometimes no more than 2), e.g. my mouse will stop working (I then have to unplug the other USBs to get it working again). I have an external usb hub (with its own power supply). Why does it do this? Any way to get around it?

Have you tried updating your drivers for your computer via Dell's website?

Which drivers in particular?
Dell website offers the following categories of driver for download. See here for the list:

Come to think of it (and testing out the theory), I think its only when I connect my USB hub to the laptop that I get the problems.

What kind of USB hub is it?

Does it take power from the USB Bus or does it use a wall outlet?

Despite what I initially thought, it turns out there is NO external power supply for the USB hub.

Well, you are overloading your USB port. Each port is only good for 500 milliwatts. You can see power draws by going into device manager, select USB controllers, select whatever controller you want and click the "power" tab.
