i cant seem to setup the internet on windows xp professional 32bit. i have the computer hard wired with a cat5 cable directly to my router. no, its not the modem lol! i have wirless connection in my home already and just want an internet connection, so that i can install mandatory updates. then i will have no use for the internet anymore on this pc. if someone knowa how to do this, please tell me. i have tried just about everything i can think of! well, with the xp setup wizard anyway.

should i plug the pc directly into the modem itself, to establish the connection 1st? then once the connection is established, go from my pc to the router? would that work?

No. But you can do that to troubleshoot. Connect directly to the modem and see if you can access the internet. If you can, do what you need to do. You can then try connecting to the router and reset both the router and the modem (unplug both from AC power - then connect the modem and wait for it to boot - then connect the router to power. This should all be done while all systems that connect to the router are on).

Are you saying that connecting directly to the modem does not work?

i figured out the problem and fixed it. which leads me to a more important question! in the device manager i am showing a yellow (?)mark with PCI device written next to it. i have troubled shooted the problem, but no luck. the computer is ruunning like it is suppose to and the drivers for the sound card and graphics card are loaded and current. i deleted the yellow (?)mark with PCI device. will it come back and will it cause a problem?
