Hello, My computer crashes sometimes and when it boots back up displays that it recovered from a system crash.

I wish to stop this from happening if I can.

We need to know more about your BSODs...

Download BlueScreenView (in Zip file)

No installation required.

Unzip downloaded file and double click on BlueScreenView.exe file to run the program and When scanning is done, go to Edit > Select All.

Then go to File > Save Selected Items, and save the report as BSOD.txt.

Open BSOD.txt in Notepad, copy all content, and paste it into your next reply.

Compliments of Broni

P.S. I could not, for the life of me, figure out how to download "Bluescreenview" from the link that you gave me. So I downloaded it from download.com.

Mod Edit: Download button is near bottom of webpage :) ~ Hamluis.

Are you doing anything in particular when you get the error?

Hmm nothing out of the ordinary. I had about 4 web pages open. I was opening a spreadsheet file. I do these types of things daily. It seems to be on a random basis.

Okay. Please check both the hd and the ram.

1) Do you have an XP CD? If so, boot to the recovery console and run chkdsk /r. If not, right-click on a command prompt icon and open as administrator. In the command prompt window type: chkdsk /r (then press ENTER). You'll be told the disk is in use and asked if you want to run checkdisk on the next boot. Say yes, exit the command prompt window, and reboot

2) To check the ram, download memtest (http://memtest.org/). Burn it to a cd using a dedicated .iso burning utility (http://www.petri.co.il/how_to_write_iso_files_to_cd.htm), make sure the cd drive is at the top of the boot order in bios, then boot to the newly created cd and run the utility. .

Okay but there are a whole myriad set of problems involved with the carrying out of the instructions you gave me.

1) I don't have a CD. My system was originally an accidentally purchased boot legged copy of windows xp home that was later validated by purchasing a 1/2 price copy of the installation because I was tricked. And god help me whenever I get a new OS I will get that CD, Frame it and place it in a vault. I've wanted to backup/fresh install many times.

2) I don't have a CD burner or CDs.

Any other options? ^-^

Okay. Please follow the instructions above to run checkdisk.

And please don't get me started on the proper use of the word "myriad" :)

Okay LOL at the myriad comment. And the Chkdsk /r took a while but it said that the volume was clean.

System crashed just prior to the chkdsk. It happened while I had 2 browser windows open and I went to RUN>CMD. Here is the BSOD crash report:

The system has recovered from a serious error.

A log of this error has been created.

Well, I'd still like you to run memtest. Perhaps you can ask someone else to create a disc for you. Meanwhile, let's see if and when your system blue-screens again now that checkdisk was run. If it does, please note what you were doing and also please post a new blue screen text as you did in post 3 above.

Also, is there anything new or different since the last time everything worked properly (ie, new hw, new sw, virus, error, etc)?

I think I mislead you~ The computer does not blue screen. It simply shuts off. Then upon my manually restarting the computer it displays the error recovery message.

Mmm I did recently have the TDL3 virus which is the google redirect virus. Sweettech helped me get rid of that and clean my system very well.

Prior to that I did 2 stupid things that may be the cause of this. I tried to speed up my welcome screen load speed by backing up my registry, deleting some "Startupreg" files that seemed out of place or suspicious. Afterwords it didn't seem to do anything so I attempted to reload my old registry by importing it. However it said "Some files are in use and cannot be replaced" So I figured it botched and made a fragmented registry.

Next, I went into RUN>MSCONFIG - Went to the WIN.INI tab - and unchecked a suspicious item "zktrpliAorkjhkW2" (Which is still currently located there, unchecked.)

Other than that~~ Oh I did take 2 old HDs and plug them into my computer. Phoenix and Eiko (D:/ and E:/) 250g / 40g

After the system crash it doesn't seem to detect those HDs and I need to let my computer rest for about 1 minute then turn it on in order for it to detect them again.

And rarely DURING computer operation they will simply become inaccessible. They will disappear from "My Computer" and I will just have the regular C:/ Drive.

Give you any ideas?

P.S. The memory test CAN be done. But would take possibly up to 3 days because not sure how long my friend would take to do the burning.

So you had viruses and you messed around with the registry. Had you said that in your original post it would have saved a lot of time and trouble on our part. The best advice I can give you is to format and reinstall.

I concur with this advise, because anytime you mess with the registry you are playing russian roulette with your computer.
