Help
Is this or are these in need of update or upgrade, and if so, exactly how? I have seen a Java update site but it was too confusing. I have on this machine, Java Run Time Environment Standard v1.3.1_02 shown in Control Panel's Add/Remove Programs, and Java Plug-in version 1.3.1_02 item shown in Control Panel. The machine is an old laptop computer, Windows XP s.p. 3, Celeron 2.0GHz processor, 512 MB RAM, 18 GB free disc space.

Hello,
Your version of Java is WAY out of date. Older versions have vulnerabilities that malicious sites can use to exploit and infect your system.
Please follow these steps to remove older version Java components and update:
Go to
> Control Panel, double-click on Add/Remove Programs or Programs and Features in Vista/Windows 7 and remove all older versions of Java.
-- Starting with Java 6u10, the uninstaller incorporated in each new release uses Enhanced Auto update to automatically remove the previous version when updating to a later update release. It will not remove older versions, so they will need to be removed manually.
-- Java is updated frequently. If you want to be automatically notified of future updates, just turn on the Java Automatic Update feature and you will not have to remember to update when Java releases a new version.
Note: The Java Quick Starter (JQS.exe) adds a service to improve the initial startup time of Java applets and applications but it's not necessary.
To disable the JQS service if you don't want to use it:

Please follow these steps to remove older version Java components and update:
- Download the latest version of Java Runtime Environment (JRE) Version 6 and save it to your desktop.
- Look for "Java Platform, Standard Edition".
- Click the "Download JRE" button to the right.
- Read the License Agreement, and then check the box that says: "Accept License Agreement".
- From the list, select your OS and Platform (32-bit or 64-bit).
- If a download for an Offline Installation is available, it is recommended to choose that and save the file to your desktop.
- Close any programs you may have running - especially your web browser.
Go to
> Control Panel, double-click on Add/Remove Programs or Programs and Features in Vista/Windows 7 and remove all older versions of Java.- Check (highlight) any item with Java Runtime Environment (JRE or J2SE) in the name.
- Click the Remove or Change/Remove button and follow the onscreen instructions for the Java uninstaller.
- Repeat as many times as necessary to remove each Java versions.
- Reboot your computer once all Java components are removed.
- Then from your desktop double-click on jre-6u26-windows-i586.exe to install the newest version.
- If using Windows 7 or Vista and the installer refuses to launch due to insufficient user permissions, then Run As Administrator.
- When the Java Setup - Welcome window opens, click the Install > button.
- If offered to install a Toolbar, just uncheck the box before continuing unless you want it.
- The McAfee Security Scan Plus tool is installed by default unless you uncheck the McAfee installation box when updating Java.

Thanks, Orange Blossom. I followed your instructions very closely as much as was possible. Two things did not happen the way you directed:
Since these choices were not given during or after install process for this Java upgrade, is more needed to be done? The browser (at least Internet Explorer) seems to show no added toolbar or tool anyway. I would not want those extra things.
- No offer of installing a toolbar was given.
- No McAfee Scan tool was offered during the install.

If there is no evidence of the toolbars in question, I wouldn't worry about it. One of our other moderators just tested the download of Java and he didn't get any toolbar mentions or installations either. It's possible it was a short-termed bundle that has been discontinued.

FWIW, I just did a "fresh" Java install on a VM running XP-- Yahoo toolbar is still offered, no reference to McAfee scan...
