When I insert a disk (cd or dvd) that is a game install disk or software install disk, I get a window that opens up with the contents of the disk. It does not activate the autorun.exe or read the autorun.inf file. The disks I am using are the original manufactured disks that you can buy in a retail store. For example, when I insert the "Command and Conquer The First Decade" dvd, I do not get a menu to decide what to install or anything. Usually, when a disk is inserted, you get a menu for the game/software asking if you want to install or exit. I get nothing at all. When I try to run the autorun.exe file from within the drive contents window that pops up, I get errors.

I'm running Windows XP SP3.

Any ideas?

Thanks in advance.

Yes. I went there first and tried their methods but nothing worked to fix my issue.

Check the Auto Play options for the CD Drive. Right click on it select properties, select an action, click play.

This does not work for my problem. The autoplay tab does not give the option of "Data Disk". So, getting the software disk to automatically load its menu when inserted is still a problem.

You might turn off the XP autoplay by selecting "take no action" on the autoplay tab.

That solution still does not work. I did as you suggested but when I insert a game install disk, an explorer window opens showing the contents of the disk. The autoplay or autorun still will not work as it should.

I am pretty much out of ideas, other than suggest looking at an autorun.inf editor (there are many free ones). One I recall allowed a autorun.inf per a particular CD, but don't remember the product name. Sorry.

One more thought: Is it possible the CD's are the Enhanced CD, and possibly the Drive doesn't recognize it properly ?

The drives I have in my computer are a SONY DVD RW and LITE-ON Combo (DVD drive/CD-RW). They used to be able to read the autorun.inf files on disks and load the menus. For some reason, they won't read them correctly anymore.

Possibility you have been hit with malware that is rendering your Cd drive not to function properly, so as to interfere with autorun. Suggest scanning with your AV or something like malwarebytes ?

I run a weekly scan with MalwareBytes and my Anti-Virus scans weekly also. Nothing shows up on either one.

I'm looking in my registry at the following key:

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\policies\Explorer]
"HonorAutoRunSetting"=dword:00000001
"NoDriveAutoRun"=dword:03ffffb7
"NoDrives"=dword:00000000

Does anyone know what the "03ffffb7" means or what it should be?

Also, this other key is odd (I think).

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explorer]
"NoDriveTypeAutoRun"=dword:00000091
"_NoDriveTypeAutoRun"=dword:00000091
"NoDriveAutoRun"=hex:83,e0,ff,03
"NoDrives"=dword:00000000

Why is there two NoDriveTypeAutoRun keys in my registry in the same place? Also, the NoDriveAutoRun for this key is strange also.

P.S. these keys are exported from my registry and copied directly from Notepad when I open the REG files to edit them.

I sent them an email so I hope they can explain this situation to me. My keys seem (at least to me) somewhat strange.
