BleepingComputer.com: New MotherBoard

Okay so before I do this I need to find out about a motherboard install.

This is a:
Compaq Presario SR5450F
Intel Pentium Dual Core

And it runs on a 775 socket type motherboard

My question is when I install a new motherboard on a compaq do they require formatting the hard-drive?

I have done it on a dell and it does.... but I also installed one on a H.P. and it does not so what should I do?

I would bet $5 that you will have to reinstall, and that you may not be able to use the OEM license for Windows that came with the HP. If you install the MB and Windows boots but gives you a Code Purple error, see my reply here.

I thought it would I can go and buy it but I would hate to do a reinstall because the customer has a lot of "important information" on there computer...

I would have to back-it up and then re-install but that is going to take more time......

I skimmed thru the topic on how to kill the purple screen....

What is that doing exactly?

The "Purple Screen" is a dirty trick played by HP on their customers (at least a few years ago, IDK if they still do it.)

Basically, there's a startup script that invokes a batch file that runs a Python script that verifies various "tattoos" on the hardware. If it detects that there's a major hardware change, you get:



even though there's no actual "error" preventing Windows from running. It's all HP BS.

Does your tutorial also work with Windows Vista?...

I remember installing a M.B. on a h.p. and it logged into Windows... Furthermore I also did it on a Acer both had X.P. O.S.

I am trying to communicate to the h.p. reps but that is no avail I doubt if these people know what they are talking about sometimes.....

Just like some associates at the electronics store...

Yeah, I'd say go for it.

I have this in a text file, along with a bunch of other stuff I accumulate in the course of business:

Under windows XP:
- Get into C:\hp\bin\CheckConfig\cfgchk.bat
- Rename the file "run.py" to "run.p_" or just delete it. (That's the file that verify the hardware configuration for the OEM version)
- Then reboot!

Under windows vista:
- Get into C:\hp\bin\CheckDMI folder
- Rename the file "CheckDMI.cmd" to "CheckDMI"
or
- Edit the file and change the "0" (zero) value (there is only one in the whole file) for "1" value...which means that the hardware configuration respect the terms of the OEM contract.
- Then reboot!

I usually boot with an Ubuntu disk, make the changes and cross my fingers (the "C:" above is whatever letter your system assigns). Also have the DMI tool, but thats more trouble than its worth for many situations.

EDIT: With the lawsuit settlement(s), I think this info is legal to post. HP/Compaq was raising a stink about it a few years ago.

Okay so yesterday I decided to replace the motherboard.... And you guys were correct it does need me to either "repair" windows or to re-install.

How can I use that dmi and change the settings on the syntax?? Can I use a website editor such as j-edit or notepad??

Please let me know as I really would hate to reinstall the operating system thanks... I will attempt to just "repair" the operating system would that work....

Here is the results...

Yes you do need to do a clean install of O.S. when installing a M.B.
I had to reinstall everything not to hard as I have a good idea (Thanks guys).

The issue I am getting now is installing Adobe Flash It fails to install...???

I have installed the rest of the drivers...

But I guess I can figure that one out by the end of the night........

After thinking about the problem I needit to install the plugins (just a heads up if it happens to you)

That is why it was not allowing me install Flash Player.
