BleepingComputer.com: Cyclical Running of Processor

Hi guys,

I did read all of the pinned threads here, just to note. I have an issue with my processor/hard drive running painfully long when the machine is booted up, and when the first programs (2 or 3) are opened. For instance, it will take 5 minutes or so for the boot to finish AND the processor finish "continuously" running. (e.g. - opening ff and a chrome tab will take 1-2 minutes to stop processing).

After this time, only randomly will the processor start spinning for minutes on end before it quits. It doesn't at all seem to correlate with one specific task I'm doing or program that I open when it happens.

I have run spybot, avg, and malwarebytes all through my machine and none of them come up with any infections or watch conditions in the log files they output. So I'm out of answers. Here are my computer specs:

*IBM Laptop (refurbished)
*Win XP PRO SP3
*1.5 ghz processor
*512MB RAM

Could this stuff really be related to my very small RAM amount, and the fact that I'm overloading the processor at times? I know my specs stink, but this machine was very cheap. But still, even with the above specs, 10 seconds to desktop when clicking the "show desktop" icon seems a bit strange. That's the kind of stuff I'm running into...

Download Security Check from HERE, and save it to your Desktop.

* Double-click SecurityCheck.exe
* Follow the onscreen instructions inside of the black box.
* A Notepad document should open automatically called checkup.txt; please post the contents of that document.

Go File>Save, and save it as AutoRuns.txt file to know location.

I don't see too many startups there.
512MB of RAM should be enough to run XP pretty smoothly.

What MAY be your possible culprit - AVG.

Go Start>Run (Start Search in Vista), type in:
msconfig
Click OK (hit Enter in Vista).

Click on Startup tab.
Click Disable all
IMPORTANT! In case of laptop, make sure, you do NOT disable any keyboard, or touchpad entries.

Click Services tab.
Put checkmark in Hide all Microsoft services
Click Disable all.

Click OK.
Restart computer in Normal Mode.

NOTE. If you use different firewall, than Windows firewall, turn Windows firewall on, just for this test, since your regular firewall won't be running.
If you use Windows firewall, you're fine.

are you serious? I know you have 10K posts here, but shutting off all the non-MS services seems strange. Is that absolutely necessary??

and the reason I don't have many startups is simply because I shut them all off already myself. You don't need anything really on startup for your machine to run, so why use them all right?

What do you want me to do this for? a speed test to see if the LT is any quicker on load?

I cannot nail down the problem EXACTLY everytime because it pops up per the situations I mentioned in first post. So I am just testing this cycle processor running problem with this too?

WELL I sure dont see the processor light running at all. actually it's not even on at all. Windows booted very quickly and since that time the processor light has not even flickered. Like I said before, usually it'll spin and the light will be ON and stagnant for a time before flickering and fading out. I've watched it after booting windows this time for about 2 minutes and it hasn't once lit up.

So do you think it's AVG? and by the way, can I leave the machine like this? the 'disable all' for startups and service only eliminated like 10 processes total for me. Is there anything pertinent to windows that I would've shut off with this test?

I'm not a big fan of AVG. One of the reasons - it seems to be heavy on resources.

Uninstall it using AVG Remover: http://www.avg.com/us-en/utilities

Restart computer and see how it goes.

no problem. what would you suggest that I use for an anti-V, then? if AVG stinks, not sure what to do. It's only the free version. symantec and/or Norton are horrendous. They over-protect you, IMO. I got sick of them the first time I installed it on my machine.

any other ideas? I will take it off, but wouldn't ya say I need some sort of the anti-V?

Of course, but we need to know, if your issue is caused by AVG, so you have to uninstall it first.
If that helps, install one of these instead:
