My cousin's laptop says:
reboot and select proper boot device or insert boot media in selected boot device press any key when ready
media test failure check cable
She homeschools her children and does not want to lose any files if at all possible.
Can anyone help?

It sound like ou hard drive has died. It could also be a dead motherboard battery. What make and model of notebook does he have?

That is the Brand name (Compaq, HP, Dell,..) and model?
PXE is a network feature. Was that in the BIOS instead of the hard drive?

You can do a Hard disk check at the Bios ....... that would be able to tell if hard disk has filed or not.
