Does anyone have an opinion regarding which desktop and then which laptop? What is the best value for the money? I realize the machines are quite different; more interested in the best value in regard to quality. (I've not heard good things about Dell and HP has exploding batteries apparently...)
All of the below products are at mainline office centers, brand new in the box, not online.

1. Dell Inspiron i570 bundle, AMD Athlon II x2 240 Dual core, 4 GB RAM, 500 GB HDD, DVD-RW drive, Windows™7, 20" WLED monitor, $399.90
2. HP S5-1014 slimline, Intel Pentium E5800, 4 GB RAM, 750 GB HDD, SuperMulti DVD burner, Windows ™ 7, 20" LCD monitor, deskjet 3000 printer, $459.97

3. HP laptop G72-B60US, 17.3" LED backlit screen, Intel Core i3-370M (2.4 GHz x2), 4 GB memory, 500 HDD, $549.99
4. HP laptop G6-1b50us, 15.6" screen, AMD Phenon ™ II Dual-core, 4 GB memory, 500 GB HDD, $399.99

The second option because the extra things you get with it like a printer.

By no means should you even consider a HP laptop. They have the highest failure rates.

Good article! Never knew Asus would be on top and luckily Toshiba.

FWIW: I would have doubts about using a reliability study that is almost 2 years old...to determine what system manufacturer might produce the best/most reliable systems today. When articles like that come out, it usually provides a stimulus for things to improve for those who are slapped in the face...while not necessarily insuring that yesteryear's best have maintained their leads.

Of course...if you are buying/considering a system from that era, the cited data would be pertinent for today's considerations.
