Help
I get the feeling that this is a fairly common problem but I couldnt find any answers online that helped or worked.
I have a Toshiba NB200 netbook and it has just come up with the error "a disk read error has occured. Press Ctrl Alt Del to continue".
Can anyone give me any advice on whether this is something that I can have a go fixing or will I need to take it to a repair shop?

Sounds to me like your hard drive is failing.
If you can get the system to boot, backup your personal data while you can.
Then replace the drive.
How old is the system?
Any chance it is still in warranty?

Thanks for getting back to me. I cant get it to boot at all - I can only get into the setup menus at the start.
I tried reinstalling a copy of Windows XP that I had kicking about but it came up and told me there was an error in the installation.

What is the complete model number of the system?
Toshiba lists a bunch of NB200 systems.
Look on the sticker un the bottom of the unit.

Ohh, the system is in the UK!
Go figure! I never would have thought of that!
Replacing the hard drive is the easy part.
The system came with XP home installed.
It has no cdrom drive.
You could use an XP home cd with your licence to reinstall but not without an external cdrom drive.
The drivers are available here
Not having a cd is really a drawback in situations like this!

I do have an external hard drive-I used it earlier to try and put my copy of XP on it but as I said, it came up with an error message when it came to loading the set up. Probably because, like you said, the hard drive is knackered.
How much would I be looking at for a new hard drive?

Depends on the size you want.
I am not sure about pricing in the UK.
Yesterday in the US, I ordered a 500 gig interal hard drive from Tiger Direct for 40 bucks.
Laptop drives are a little higher.
But you are still stuck on how to reinstall XP without a disk or cdrom drive.

Sorry, when I said I had an external hard drive, I actually meant an external CDROM drive. I used my old copy (CD ROM) of XP to try and repair it but nothing.

Reinstalling XP wont repair a hard drive that is failing or has failed.
Your best bet is to replace it.
Replacing the drive is a simple proceedure.
Make sure that you remove the battery and unplug the unit before doing so.
That might sound obvious but I must mention it.

Install the chipset first. Then display, audio, network, WIFI and card reader.
