Slow startup and shutdown after failed software installation

Yesterday I tried to install Foxit Reader 3.0 on my computer. The program was not able to run on such an old computer, so I tried to uninstall it. The uninstall program would not run, so I had to remove the files manually. Since then, the computer has taken longer to start up and shut down. When I try to shut the computer down, the icons and taskbar will disappear and then it sits there with nothing but the desktop background on the screen for about ten seconds. Is there anything I can do to make it shut down faster? The computer is running Windows 98 First Edition.

It actually freezes for 20 seconds with nothing on the screen except the background. I might have to reinstall Windows.

The incredibly long shutdown time is another problem. What could cause that?

Try a system restore to reset the registry.

I'm not sure if Win98 FE is the same as Win98SE but if you hold down the Ctrl key as its booting up you should see the Boot Menu, select Command Prompt Only. At C:\ type in Scanreg /restore if it says bad command or filename type in cd c:\windows\command and enter then type in Scanreg /restore and select a date before you installed FireFox then let it restart and try it again.

I already reinstalled Windows. I suspect that Foxit Reader installed malware.

For shutdown issues in 98 try disabling fast shutdown.

98Se has a shutdown supplement but I dont think it works with first edition.

Did the reload fix the problem?

In the beginning there was the command line.

Yes, the problem was solved by reinstalling Windows.

A Windows reinstallation rarely works it can cause more problems thah it solves. If its cured you problem then you've been lucky?

How could it cause more problems? I reformatted the hard drive and installed Windows from the original recovery CD.

A format & clean install typically fixes anything.
Even problems you didnt know you had!

The memory usage still seems unustally high for a computer that came from the factory with 32MB of RAM. Under most conditions, there is no more than 20MB of RAM free out of 128MB.

Hi,

I have a trouble related to extremely slow shutdown.

Following is the activity I conducted which resulted in extremely slow shut down (@ 80 sec).

1. I accidently changed the file association of .exe with "7z" console (compression tool like winrar, winzip)
2. Then I uninstalled 7z.
3. Then I reset file association of .exe.

I had slow shutdown issue since step 2.

Kindly help me.

Always remember whenever you install a program/software a copy of its registry goes in c:(drive) in Windows folder so when ever you remove the files manually (as you did) will cause some bad effects on other software associated with it and sometimes on operating system too.

My suggestion will be to again installed that software and then properly remove from your control panel from "add/remove programs." hope this helps.

That won't help if the uninstaller does nothing except create thousands of files in C:\Windows\Temp and won't stop until the hard drive is completely filled. That is what the Foxit Reader uninstaller did.

I don't know what happened with 7Zip. I haven't needed to uninstall it.
