I have windows xp professional

I recently had a blue screen of death which i fixed (with help)

It was fixed by booting to an xp recovery disk.

I now need to set up an internet connection.

I plugged in an ethernet cable from my hub to the computer. (this cable works fine for another laptop I have)

When I put the bt broadband set up disk into the computer, it says it cannot detect either a wireless or wired connection type on my computer.

Any pointers would be appreciated.

thanks

First of all, using a recovery disk to address a blue screen error is rarely the right thing to do.

Open Device Manager. Any yellow or red symbols?

Well, I don't know the full story so maybe it was a good move - who knows?

Go to START - RUN and type: devmgmt.msc (then press ENTER)

yep i'm just glad i got an older laptop working again.

So I did what you said and I can see yellow question mark symbols saying "ethernet controller", network controller, PCI device etc.

Okay. It sounds more like you did a clean install than a recovery. Either way, you need to go to the website of your laptop manufacturer and download and install all drivers appropriate for your computer starting with the chipset driver.

Can I download to another computer using a memory stick and copy and past to the computer in question?

so far so good
I have downloaded and installed the drivers as you said
I have been able to connect wirelessly but the signal is too far away and I want to connect with and ethernet cable instead.

when I plug in the ethernet cable, I am not able to go online. The hub is fine and the cable is fine, (it works on another laptop),

So I was wondering what i need to do next to connect via the cable.

The cd that comes with my isp is not very helpful. It only tries to connect me to wireless which I don't want.

any help appreciated

sorry what I meant to say is that I opened device manager but not sure how to find any errors.
there is a section for "other devices" which all have what looks like yellow question marks.
these are for "audio devices", "ethernet controller" and "video controller".

when I click on "ethernet controller", is says "the drivers for this device are not installed (code 28)"

Did you install the chipset drive as I suggested before?

Please, go back to your laptop mfg's website and find any drivers you did not yet install and download and install them (chipset, ethernet, video, whatever)

**SUCCESS**

I went back and installed a couple of things I missed.

All seems to be working

I can't thank you enough
