I have an issue with what sounds like my internal HD runninng while IE is launched and sometimes when I am using certain applications like Photoshop. I just ran a complete virus clean up as I was infected with Windows XP Restore. This problem was happening before the virus and is still happening.

Sounds normal to me. Web browsers often cache data on the HDD, and other applications (such as Photoshop) often need to access the drive in order to load parts of the application that are not already in RAM. Windows may also be writing to its paging file.

While frequent hd activity is not necessarily unusual, if you did not have assistance with the malware removal you might want to post in the Am I Infected forum on this site and have one of BC's malware removal specialists check you out.

Okay. Well you can open Task Manager to the Processes tab and sort on the cpu column with highest usage at the top to see if any particular process is using the cpu when you see the hd activity. But unless you are having some problem I wouldn't worry about it. It could be indexing or some other background process that is perfectly legitimate.

Do you have Windows updates set to automatically download? If so, they could be downloading anytime you are connected.

Most of the time when I look at CPU usage it is less than 50% when I hear the HD running. I have a few things CATBYTE in the malware post said to do so I will try those first. some clean up and HD defrag work she posted as a final to my malware problem. Will try that and repost if still a problem. Thanks

Whoa - if your cpu usage remains at 50% there's a problem.
