Posted Image When posting a log please put the type of infection you have in the topic title. IE: Winfixer, Virtumonde, WinTools, WebSearch, Home Search Assistant, etc.


Posted Image Do not bump your topic. We try to resolve logs on a first come/first served basis. By bumping your log you will be pushed back in line due to the new date of your bump.

Hello, thanks for taking the time to respond to this.
My Toshiba laptop is running Windows XP (Home edition service pack 3)
I use both Internet Explorer8 and Mozilla Firefox3.5.19
I use Norton Security Suite (Anti-Virus and Firewall) and Spybot S&D

I first noticed a problem, when Norton alerted me by generating messages indicating that an intrusion attempt was blocked. The message states: "An intrusion attempt by 213.229.83.132 was blocked" Norton also discovered a Trojan.ZefarCH!gen6 virus and quarantined it.
I have noticed that there are multiple iexplorer.exe running in the background. This happens whenever Im using Internet Explorer... although, I have seen them running in the background without Internet explorer running.
My google search results are sometimes redirected. I can navigate to the correct link only by going back to the search results and clicking on the link a second time. This issue occurs in both Explorer and Firefox. I also just realized that my windows automatic update has not occured in a long time.

I followed all the steps in the preparation guide. I encountered a problem with running the DDS.scr file. I downloaded it several times. When I click on the DDS.scr icon off my desktop, nothing happens. It doesnt do... well, anything. So according to the instructions in the preparation guide, I continued. I managed to produce a GMER log which has been attached to this post. Im not sure if this has anything to do with my problem or not, but the GMER scan took over an hour to complete.

I will be working on your malware issues, this may or may not solve other issues you may have with your machine.

Please note that whatever repairs we make, are for fixing your computer problems only and by no means should be used on another computer.
  • The cleaning process is not instant. Logs can take some time to research, so please be patient with me. I know that you need your computer working as quickly as possible, and I will work hard to help see that happen.

  • The logs that you post should be pasted directly into the reply. Only attach them if requested or if they do not fit into the post.

If you have since resolved the original problem you were having, we would appreciate you letting us know. If not please perform the following steps below so we can have a look at the current condition of your machine.

If you have not done so, include a clear description of the problems you're having, along with any steps you may have performed so far.
If you have already posted a log, please do so again, as your situation may have changed.
Use the 'Add Reply' and add the new log to this thread.

We need to see some information about what is happening in your machine. Please perform the following scan:
  • Download DDS by sUBs from one of the following links. Save it to your desktop.
  • Double click on the DDS icon, allow it to run.
  • A small box will open, with an explaination about the tool. No input is needed, the scan is running.
  • Notepad will open with the results.
  • Follow the instructions that pop up for posting the results.
  • Close the program window, and delete the program from your desktop.
Please note: You may have to disable any script protection running if the scan fails to run. After downloading the tool, disconnect from the internet and disable all antivirus protection. Run the scan, enable your A/V and reconnect to the internet.

Thanks for the response =)

I downloaded and ran DDS.pif (The .scr version still did not work).
I ran DDS several times, but it does not finish scanning. The progress bar gets through about 75% of the way and then it just freezes up. I thought maybe its a slow scan... and left it that way for about 2 hours. I tried running the scan in Safe Moded, and the same thing happens. I made sure that both Norton and Spybot were completely disabled. I attempted the scan even after disconnecting from the internet. In all cases, the scan freezes up indefinitely.
On one of the scans, before it froze up, a message flashed on the black screen... I couldnt catch all of the message, but it definitely said "Access Denied"

  • As part of it's process, ComboFix will check to see if the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed. With malware infections being as they are today, it's strongly recommended to have this pre-installed on your machine before doing any malware removal. It will allow you to boot up into a special recovery/repair mode that will allow us to more easily help you should your computer have a problem after an attempted removal of malware.
  • Follow the prompts to allow ComboFix to download and install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console, and when prompted, agree to the End-User License Agreement to install the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console.
**Please note: If the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is already installed, or if you are running Vista, ComboFix will continue it's malware removal procedures.

Once the Microsoft Windows Recovery Console is installed using ComboFix, you should see the following message:

Click on Yes, to continue scanning for malware.

When finished, it shall produce a log for you. Please include the C:\Combofix.txt in your next reply.

Thanks for the reply. :)

I tried to run ComboFix several times, but have been unsuccessful. I tried to run the programs from both links... BOTH were unsuccessful. After I click on the .exe file, a blue screen comes up and it looks like ComboFix is running... but nothing happens for hours on end. The screen says the scan should take 10 minutes (up to twice as long in some cases)... I ran the scan and let it stay in this state for more than 3 hours... and nothing happens!

I should also let you know that it appears that my computer has begun automatic updates now... it was recently updated also (before the ComboFix scan).

I haven't received any "Intrusion attempt" notices lately from Norton either. However, when I open Internet Explorer, I notice that 2 iexplorer.exe are still running in the background... it used to have as many as 5 or 6 before.

So now concerned about having 2 iexplorer.exe in the background... is this normal? (Im not using additional tabs). Also, I'm really curious as to why the ComboFix or DDS scans have not worked.

Hi again, lets try the following first.

Please download the TDSS Rootkit Removing Tool (TDSSKiller.exe) and save it to your Desktop. <-Important!!!
  • Double-click on TDSSKiller.exe to run the tool for known TDSS variants.
    Vista/Windows 7 users right-click and select Run As Administrator.
  • If TDSSKiller does not run, try renaming it.
  • To do this, right-click on TDSSKiller.exe, select Rename and give it a random name with the .com file extension (i.e. 123abc.com). If you do not see the file extension, please refer to How to change the file extension.
  • Click the Start Scan button.
  • Do not use the computer during the scan
  • If the scan completes with nothing found, click Close to exit.
  • If malicious objects are found, they will show in the Scan results - Select action for found objects and offer three options.
  • Ensure Cure (default) is selected, then click Continue > Reboot now to finish the cleaning process.
  • A log file named TDSSKiller_version_date_time_log.txt (i.e. TDSSKiller.2.4.0.0_27.07.2010_09.o7.26_log.txt) will be created and saved to the root directory (usually Local Disk C:).
  • Copy and paste the contents of that file in your next reply.

I just ran the TDSSKiller file. No infections were found. It processed 232 objects.

From IE8 having multiple IExplore.exe processes running is nothing uncommon.

Can you reboot in safe mode and try to run combofix from there?

I ran Combofix in Safe Mode.
Same results... Processed 232 objects. No infections found.

That sounds like you ran TDSSkiller, not combofix. :)

Oops, you're right... I did run TDSS by mistake. Sorry.

So I went back into safe mode and ran Combofix. It did the same thing: Initially, it looks like it is running the scan and then nothing happens for hours on end. The following message is displayed on a blue screen:
"Scanning for infected files... This typically doesnt take more than 10 minutes. However, scan times for badly infected machines may easily double."

I dont know if this is important, but I noticed that the clock in the tray bottom right task bar, does not change!
I left the computer in this state for 4 hours! The only way to exit this state is to hold the power button down... CTRL+ALT+DEL also does not work.

Please click Start > Run, type combofix /killall and press enter. Does it run like that?

No it doesnt. :(
Same thing... it starts to run and then stays on that same blue screen indefinitely.

I tried running it this way in normal mode and safe mode.
I also got a message that a newer version of Combofix was available. I updated and tried again... no joy.
