When posting your problem, do not run and post a ComboFix log. ComboFix is a tool that should only be run under the supervision of someone who has been trained in its use. Using it on your own can cause problems with your computer. Any posts containing CF Logs will be ignored.

To receive help, you should instead provide a detailed description of your problem, detailed word-for-word error messages that you are receiving, screenshots of strange behaviour, and your operating system. This information is much more useful to our helpers than a ComboFix log.

xp 2012 security virus won't go away

so apparently, i spoke to soon and the virus isn't completely removed. We did the steps that were listed in the virus tab and my wife ran Malwarebytes, which found some viruses, and then was prompted to restart the computer. when she would start up she gets a message that says that her start menu has been changed from the default, and it asks if she wants to change it back to the default. She has been x'ing out of it as she thought that she didn't want to change it. The virus also shows up before she even checks that box.

Any thoughts?

Boot into Safe Mode with Networking

Run MBAM (MalwareBytes):

Please download Malwarebytes Anti-Malware and save it to your desktop.
MBAM may "make changes to your registry" as part of its disinfection routine. If using other security programs that detect registry changes (ie Spybot's Teatimer), they may interfere or alert you. Temporarily disable such programs or permit them to allow the changes.
  • Make sure you are connected to the Internet.
  • Double-click on mbam-setup.exe to install the application.
    For instructions with screenshots, please refer to the How to use Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware Guide.
  • When the installation begins, follow the prompts and do not make any changes to default settings.
  • When installation has finished, make sure you leave both of these checked:
    • Update Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware
    • Launch Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware

  • Then click Finish.
MBAM will automatically start and you will be asked to update the program before performing a scan.
  • If an update is found, the program will automatically update itself. Press the OK button to close that box and continue.
  • If you encounter any problems while downloading the definition updates, manually download them from here and just double-click on mbam-rules.exe to install.
On the Scanner tab:
  • Make sure the "Perform Quick Scan" option is selected.
  • Then click on the Scan button.
  • If asked to select the drives to scan, leave all the drives selected and click on the Start Scan button.
  • The scan will begin and "Scan in progress" will show at the top. It may take some time to complete so please be patient.
  • When the scan is finished, a message box will say "The scan completed successfully. Click 'Show Results' to display all objects found".
  • Click OK to close the message box and continue with the removal process.
Back at the main Scanner screen:
  • Click on the Show Results button to see a list of any malware that was found.
  • Make sure that everything is checked, and click Remove Selected.
  • When removal is completed, a log report will open in Notepad.
  • The log is automatically saved and can be viewed by clicking the Logs tab in MBAM.
  • Copy and paste the contents of that report in your next reply. Be sure to post the complete log to include the top portion which shows MBAM's database version and your operating system.
  • Exit MBAM when done.
Note: If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be asked to reboot your computer so MBAM can proceed with the disinfection process. If asked to restart the computer, please do so immediately. Failure to reboot normally (not into safe mode) will prevent MBAM from removing all the malware.

I had the same problem with the win 7 security 2012 virus, even after following the instructions from this site and several additional scans with Malwarebytes in safe mode the virus persisted until finally Malwarebytes found the remaining malware in the system that were causing pop-ups and re-directs. In all I'd say it took about 5 scans to finally return my laptop to working order when I booted in normal mode from which I then did two scans each with Malwarebytes and Avira in which all managed to find additional trojans still in the system. The key for me to rid my laptop of the virus was persistence, even when the system appeared to operate normally my anti-virus and anti-malware software found that it wasn't gone completely. I also ran TDSSkiller and Vundofix which showed negative results, I ran the former after Avira found a Vundo which Malwarebytes scans missed. From the information I've read it seems these two viruses are one and the same and just change name depending what OS you're using and from my own personal experience it seems to be a particularly nasty one that doesn't seem to want to go away easily.

Also if it's ok I'd like to ask does anyone know of any additional things I could do following what I've already done to ensure that this virus has completely gone from my laptop? Although my laptop shows no symptoms of being infected, I have obvious doubts since both Avira and Malwarebytes both missed several things that were picked up on later scans.
