Just switched to ubuntu so not very familiar with the system
I had windows 7 installed and my resolution was 1920x1080
my video card is a gtx295 my monitor is a acer sh243l
i used the restricted driver from the system/admin
the maximum resolution i can reach is 1300x700
I do believe that this is possible.
I downloaded the driver from nvidia for linux
but what do I do with it?
where is my device manager?
do I need a driver for the monitor?

This may help: http://us.download.nvidia.com/XFree86/Linux-x86_64/270.41.19/README/installdriver.html
Note: This assumes you're running 64-bit.

You shouldn't.
More info here: http://us.download.nvidia.com/XFree86/Linux-x86_64/270.41.19/README/index.html
(Again, this assumes you're running 64-bit)

Try this:
Press ALT+F2 to bring up the launcher (analogous to the Windows "Run..." option in the Start Menu.) In the launcher type gksudo nvidia-settings. This should launch the settings program included with the NVidia drivers after asking for your password (since you'll be changing system-wide settings.) Select "X-Server Display Configuration" from the list to the left and change the resolution section to your desired resolution. Then click "Save To X Configuration File" button and agree to any warnings about the file not existing, if they occur. Then quit the settings program, reboot and cross your fingers.
