installing software in ubuntu 10.10

hello evry body just i am new to this discussion forum
and also iam new user of ubuntu operating system.
and i was trying to read more tutorials and question and answer on various websites abount ubuntu(linux) but still iacn't find any solution
so i hope you will give me an accurate answer for my qoustion.the problem is iam install ubuntu 10.10 but i cant install any software
when i was trying to write in the terminal like"sudo apt-get install update" the out put is like this
"Reading package lists... Done
Building dependency tree
Reading state information... Done
E: Unable to locate package update" for the other software also the same problem also occur.
please help me

Are you trying to install a particular program or are updates failing? I have had problems with updates in Ubuntu 10.10, I have it resolved for now, there is a topic regarding that here.
It's nice to be important, it's much more important to be nice.
