Administrator problem? After effects of malware

I was infected by malware or a virus. (It was one of those that fakes being a diagnostic/protection service.) Avast! cleared it up, I think, but there are some residual problems. For example, I am unable to use Task Manager because my Administrator blocks it. There is one program I have, the Compact Oxford English Dictionary (COED11), that I can't access, despite several attempts from its software developer to fix the problem; and I think this may also be related to the Administrator.

Any suggestions would be much appreciated.

Click Start, Run and type this command exactly as given below: (better - Copy and paste)

Quote

REG add HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\System /v DisableTaskMgr /t REG_DWORD /d 0 /f

Sorry, can't help with that dictionary program.

Have you tried uninstalling & reinstalling the dictionary program?
In the beginning there was the command line.

Yes, but that changed nothing. I even installed a new .exe file sent by the developer, and still got the same error message.

You could always just use Google & type in define: and the word you want.
In the beginning there was the command line.

Or I could use dictionary.com or use of one of my hard copy dictionaries ... but I don't want to. I paid for the COED11, I like it, and I want to be able to use it.

Since the developer has made several attempts to fix your problem (you never said what it was), consulting them may be your only recourse.
In the beginning there was the command line.

The program does not open. I get an error message saying "Could not write license [sic] data."

Sound like an issue with their software to me.
Did it ever work?
What did the manufacturer say?
In the beginning there was the command line.

Yes, it worked fine. I used it every single day for I'd guess a year and a half, and I never saw that message before. Oxford University Press and the developer have been trying to help.

You might see if they can tell you how to completely uninstall their software (only they will know that) then reinstall it. Thats about the best you can do.
Definitely an issue with their licence file.
In the beginning there was the command line.

You are suggesting that there is a difference between uninstalling and "completely" uninstalling?

There is a difference.

For example, to uninstall a Norton product you do so through add/remove programs as normal.
To completely uninstall it you use their removal tool which removes all the files, folders and registry entries that add/remove programs does not.

Im afraid that the only folks that are going to be able to fix the issue with your licence file is the manufacturer.
Only they know how the licence file is written, how it works and how it should be installed.
In the beginning there was the command line.

Seems reasonable. I have passed along your suggestion (without attribution) to my contact at OUP who is dealing with the issue.
