I have some old usb drives whose contents I am moving to a new back up drive. I can't delete the slush pile of files. This seems to be a common problem with old files. What is the fix?

They are empty folders in the root directory. When I hover my mouse over them it says the folder is empty. When I try to delete them it says that the directory is not empty,
