...I've tried running the ESET scan a number of times, but the machine keeps shutting itself off, and I don't know why. When I leave the machine on without running the scan, it stays on, but when running the scan, it keeps shutting off. Odd.

How far in to the scan does it get? Before it shuts down does it give any sort of message?

Still here...but contemplating just wiping the hard drive and starting all over again...don't know what happens when the machine shuts down during ESET scan, as I'm not near it when it happens...

Okay. It may be easy just to reformat and re-install the drive and start fresh with it.

I guess so...ESET scan isn't working, can't open in anything other than Safe Mode...heck with it, guess I'm going Linux, unless you know where I can get a free version of Windows

David,

You may want to contact Microsoft, and see if they'd be able to help you out with getting a Windows Vista disc.
