I have IE 8 on my computer but my some website's see it as IE 6 and won't let me access the web site. I understand that I have a corrupted User-Agent String but I don't understand the fix. Microsofts fix for it reads like stereo instructions. Can someone assist me in understanding it and correcting my problem?

Why not simply repair/reinstall IE 8, if that's the problem?

How to reinstall or repair Internet Explorer and Outlook Express in Windows XP - http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?kbid=318378

I would probably try the Fixit tool on that link, first.

I have tried that, didn't work. Neither did the "fix it" program.

Can you give us an example of websites that think you are running IE6?
In the beginning there was the command line.

What is the exact onscreen error message...and exactly when does it appear?

When I go to their web page. "We no longer support Internet Explorer 6. While you may still be able to watch videos, most new site features will not work properly.

To upgrade and step into the 21st century, please visit one of these sites:"

With IE open...click Help/About Internet Explorer.

What is reflected?

I would disable all unnecessary add-ons in IE...and then try to access the website.

Please list all add-ons you currently reflect for IE.

Do you have another browser installed, in addition to IE?

Is the metacafe.com website...the only one which provides this warning?

It shows IE 8. I dont know what "add ons" are or how to check for it. My user agent string is

User Agent: Mozilla/4.0 (compatible; MSIE 8.0; Windows NT 5.1; Trident/4.0; Mozilla/4.0 (compatible; MSIE 6.0; Windows NT 5.1; SV1) ; .NET CLR 1.0.3705; Media Center PC 4.0; .NET CLR 2.0.50727; .NET CLR 1.1.4322; .NET CLR 3.0.4506.2152; .NET CLR 3.5.30729; .NET4.0C; IE0006_ver1;EN_US)

With IE open...Tools/Manage Add-ons. The list in the screen reveals your browser add-ons.

Louis

I would appreciate an answer to the other questions I posed.
