BleepingComputer.com: network settings for PS3

I know this is not necessarily computer related but was wondering if someone knows what the optimal network settings are for the playstation 3 for online gaming...whether we connect through ethernet or router we still cannot get the optimal settings needed to play black ops

we are not sure how to optimize the settings and rather we do it on the router or playstation or where

What problems are you having on Black Ops? PS3 is pretty straight forward unless you need to forward ports (which you normally don't need to do).

there is a lot of lag in the game when playing (maybe not set at optimal performance?) - we also thought NAT was a problem because it is set at moderate not open and we don't know how to change it back...gotta love the kids

If NAT on the router was your issue you probably wouldn't be able to connect at all--seems like all that would do would be to block specific ports. Your bandwith seems fine. I don't understand why your ping was so high or why you did not receive a ping reply when tested on the PS3 but everything else looks good from a network standpoint to me. Bearer in mind I know nothing about a PS3. I would try to contact their technical support and tell them what you have tested here so far within our range of knowledge and see if they would know more.

Moderate NAT restricts voice communication and will keep you from being assigned host in-game. It does not cause lag.

256ms is very high. Can you try testing to a different server on SpeedTest.net? Just click a 2nd closest server around you.

Also, open up command prompt (start -> run (just type in the search box on Vista & 7) -> type "cmd" (without the quotes) and press enter). At the black screen that appears type the following.

ping google.com -n 10

Once that finishes, post back what it says your packet loss is and the max, min, and average ping times you received.
