I recently was infected with one of the scam antivirus virus that were going around.
I think I've all but cleaned my pc.
Ran malwarebytes, avast, combofix and appeared to have fixed all my problems, except now i cannot update my windows.
I've tried the recommendation here:
http://blogs.msdn.com/b/astebner/archive/2006/09/04/739820.aspx
After completion however I am still not able to update.
Any ideas?

Resolved.
This did the trick
Stop update service:
in run type services.msc, go to windows update and right click select stop.
Rename your softwaredistribution folder:
Go to C:\Windows and find the folder named SoftwareDistribution and rename it to something else.
now create a new folder called SoftwareDistribution in c:\Windows
Restart windows update:
in run type services.msc, right click on windows update and select start
Now restart your computer, and try to use windows update.

Hello hijack204 ,
I'm glad your problems appear to be resolved. If you experience issues with your computer, please start a new topic.
Note to everyone reading this: Because each computer set-up is different and every malware mix is different, what will work on one computer may not work on another and indeed may cause it not to work. I've seen it happen.
