Hard Drive Dock Compatibility Never bought one, don't want to get the wrong one

I have an external drive with a bad usb port. Soldering it back on didn't work. So now I'm looking into buying a hard drive dock.

Do I need to consider more than the size of the drive itself?

Would any dock work as long as it can accept a 3.5 inch drive?

It's not a computer, it's an external hard drive. I want to take the drive out of it and put it on a dock.

It's a Seagate FreeAgent Pro mseries. All the specs for the external drive are at the link in my post.

I understand that you have an external hdd, and that there is a problem with the USB port. But what you aren't telling us is this usb port on the Acer Veriton m661 which is listed as your computer in your profile.

If this is the computer in question, are all of the USB ports unresponsive?

I used the wrong words in my original post. Sorry.

The problem has nothing to do with my desk top.

I took a picture to show you the part I'm talking about, but I can't seem to attach any files. The part that I'm having problems with is on the external drive itself. The place that I plug the USB cable into the external drive..........That thing, what ever it is called, fell off of the (little 'chip board'?). I have no way of plugging a USB cable into the external drive.

Ok, here's my confusion. You mention trying to do a soldering repair on a bad USB port that failed. Then you go on to question the use of a docking station for an external hdd. I'm trying to find out if all of the USB ports are having trouble, or just the one that you are trying to repair.

What I don't understand is why you are interested in using a docking station apposed to an external enclosure for the hdd.

If you are having problem with all of the USB ports there are PCI cards that you can use to add USB ports.

I did some looking around for information regarding expansion bays, and it looks like the are four internal 3.5 expansion bays. This raises the question of why don't you install the external hdd inside the case?

A couple of reasons.

First, having a hard drive port is something I could use for other stuff anyway.

Primarily, because I never leave my external drive permanently connected to my computer. I feel safer about keeping junk off of it this way. I also recently had a hardware issue that corrupted all the files on my computers hard drive. I had to wipe the whole thing and re-install everything.

I use the external drive mainly to back up everything on my computers and save important stuff, like tax info. I don't want to take any chances on losing any of this stuff or have anyone else figure out how to get access to this info.
