BleepingComputer.com: Several Malware Detected & Potential Rootkit

I was informed early this morning that our PC was potentially infected with reported activity of opening undesired web pages, programs opening/closing automatically, and Windows Vista Home Security popping up with a list of infections.

I am still in the very early stages of back tracking this problem but it appears that a member of our household was visiting a website, when they must have clicked on a sponsor link for that took them to another site. There is no history for the second site, but the time stamp was about 15 minutes before the problems started to occur. Everything else in the history log is pretty average for our household.

AVG scans came up clean, but there is a line item in the virus vault around that time with this entry:

Virus Name: Found registry key with reference to file C:\ Users\Computer\AppData\Local\oxp.exe

Date of storage: 5/8/2011, 7:14:01am

Perhaps I’m incorrect in thinking that one click to a mystery website caused all this – but I’m not sure how to look and find out where all these came from? Any help diagnosing and correcting this would be greatly appreciated. The infected PC has been completely disconnected from the internet and I will be using our backup for the duration of the recovery.

I have included the DDS attachment but unfortunately I had complications running the GMER and am unable to include the Ark report. I browsed through the Forum & Prep Guide but was unable to locate troubleshooting information for the GMER and so I'm not sure what steps to take to efficiently run this scan.
The first time I ran the program I encountered an error fairly quickly into the scan, but I don't recall what exactly the message was; I ran it a second time and it went for several hours but ended up freezing the computer requiring a manual reboot.

Any help to diagnose and repair our PC would be grealty appreciated - thank you so much in advance, cheers!

Please print out or make a copy in notpad of any instructions given, as sometimes it is necessary to go offline and you will lose access to them.

DeFogger:

Please download DeFogger to your desktop.

Double click DeFogger to run the tool.

• The application window will appear
  
• Click the Disable button to disable your CD Emulation drivers
  
• Click Yes to continue
  
• A 'Finished!' message will appear
  
• Click OK
  
• DeFogger may ask you to reboot the machine, if it does - click OK

Do not re-enable these drivers until otherwise instructed.

Please disable any anti-malware program that will block scripts from running before running DDS.


• Double-Click on dds.scr and a command window will appear. This is normal.
  
• Shortly after two logs will appear:

  • Attach.txt
  
  
• A window will open instructing you save & post the logs
  
• Save the logs to a convenient place such as your desktop
  
• Copy the contents of both logs & post in your next reply

Scan With RKUnHooker

• Please Download Rootkit Unhooker Save it to your desktop.
  
• Now double-click on RKUnhookerLE.exe to run it.
  
• Click the Report tab, then click Scan.
  
• Check (Tick) Drivers, Stealth,. Uncheck the rest. then Click OK.
  
• Wait till the scanner has finished and then click File, Save Report.
  
• Save the report somewhere where you can find it. Click Close.

Copy the entire contents of the report and paste it in a reply here.

Note** you may get this warning it is ok, just ignore

"Rootkit Unhooker has detected a parasite inside itself!

Please print out or make a copy in notpad of any instructions given, as sometimes it is necessary to go offline and you will lose access to them.

Run Combofix:

You may be asked to install or update the Recovery Console (Win XP Only) if this happens please allow it to do so (you will need to be connected to the internet for this)

Before you run Combofix I will need you to turn off any security software you have running, If you do not know how to do this you can find out >here< or >here<

Combofix may need to reboot your computer more than once to do its job this is normal.

You can download Combofix from one of these links. I want you to save it to the desktop and run it from there.

1. Close any open browsers or any other programs that are open.
2. Close/disable all anti virus and anti malware programs so they do not interfere with the running of ComboFix.

Double click on combofix.exe & follow the prompts.
When finished, it will produce a report for you.

Note 1: Do not mouseclick combofix's window while it's running. That may cause it to stall

Note 2: If you recieve an error "Illegal operation attempted on a registery key that has been marked for deletion." Please restart the computer

Thanks so much for a prompt response! It's so awesome that you volunteer to help people like me with their computer problems I can't tell you much I appreciate it!


I ran combo fix but had a little difficulty turning off my AVG 8.5 - I followed the steps to disable the Resident Shield but it was still running different things under the Task Manager. I uninstalled it completely and ran ComboFix - I attached the completed log to this post.


As far as seeing a change in operation - I'm not sure if this is supposed to happen, but everything I try to open or run gives me an error message: Illegal operation attempted on a registry key that has been marked for deletion.


Let me know what the next steps are - thanks again so much!

Restarting the computer will clear up that problem





These logs are looking alot better. But we still have some work to do.

Please print out these instructions, or copy them to a Notepad file. It will make it easier for you to follow the instructions and complete all of the necessary steps..

uninstall some programs

1. click on start
2. then go to settings
3. after that you need control panel
4. look for the icon add/remove programs
click on the following programs

Adobe Reader 9.1.3

and click on remove

Update Adobe Reader

Recently there have been vunerabilities detected in older versions of Adobe Reader. It is strongly suggested that you update to the current version.

You can download it from http://www.adobe.com/products/acrobat/readstep2.html
After installing the latest Adobe Reader, uninstall all previous versions.
If you already have Adobe Photoshop® Album Starter Edition installed or do not wish to have it installed UNcheck the box which says Also Download Adobe Photoshop® Album Starter Edition.


If you don't like Adobe Reader (53 MB), you can download Foxit PDF Reader(7 MB) from here. It's a much smaller file to download and uses a lot less resources than Adobe Reader.

Note: When installing FoxitReader, be carefull not to install anything to do with AskBar.

Your Java is out of date.

It can be updated by the Java control panel

• click on Start-> Control Panel (Classic View)-> Java (looks like a coffee cup) -> Update Tab -> Update Now.
  
• An update should begin;
  
• follow the prompts

Clear your Java Cache

• click on Start-> Control Panel (Classic View)-> Java (looks like a coffee cup)
  
  • On the General tab, under Temporary Internet Files, click the Settings button.
    
  • Next, click on the Delete Files button
  • There are two options in the window to clear the cache - Leave BOTH Checked
    Applications and Applets
    Trace and Log Files
    
    
  • Click OK on Delete Temporary Files Window
    Note: This deletes ALL the Downloaded Applications and Applets from the CACHE.
    
  • Click OK to leave the Temporary Files Window
    
  • Click OK to leave the Java Control Panel.

TFC(Temp File Cleaner):

• Please download TFC to your desktop,
  
• Save any unsaved work. TFC will close all open application windows.
  
• Double-click TFC.exe to run the program.
  
• If prompted, click "Yes" to reboot.

Note: Save your work. TFC will automatically close any open programs, let it run uninterrupted. It shouldn't take longer take a couple of minutes, and may only take a few seconds. Only if needed will you be prompted to reboot.

: Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware :

I would like you to rerun MBAM


• Double-click mbam icon
  
• go to the update tab at the top
  
• click on check for updates
  
• If an update is found, it will download and install the latest version.
  
• Once the program has loaded, select Perform quick scan, then click Scan.
  
• When the scan is complete, click OK, then Show Results to view the results.
  
• Be sure that everything is Checked (ticked) except items in the C:\System Volume Information folder and click on Remove Selected.
  
• When completed, a log will open in Notepad. please copy and paste the log into your next reply
  
  • If you accidently close it, the log file is saved here and will be named like this:
    
  • C:\Documents and Settings\Username\Application Data\Malwarebytes\Malwarebytes' Anti-Malware\Logs\mbam-log-date (time).txt

Note: If MBAM encounters a file that is difficult to remove, you will be presented with 1 of 2 prompts.
Click OK to either and let MBAM proceed with the disinfection process.
If asked to restart the computer, please do so immediately. Failure to reboot will prevent MBAM from removing all the malware.

Download HijackThis

• Go Here to download HijackThis Installer
  
• Save HijackThis Installer to your desktop.
  
• Double-click on the HijackThis Installer icon on your desktop. (Vista and Win 7 right click and run as admin)
  
• By default it will install to C:\Program Files\Trend Micro\HijackThis .
  
• Click on Install.
  
• It will create a HijackThis icon on the desktop.
  
• Once installed it will launch Hijackthis.
  
• Click on the Do a system scan and save a logfile button. It will scan and the log should open in notepad.
  
• Click on Edit > Select All then click on Edit > Copy to copy the entire contents of the log.
  
• Come back here to this thread and Paste the log in your next reply.
  
• DO NOT use the AnalyseThis button its findings are dangerous if misinterpreted.
  
• DO NOT have Hijackthis fix anything yet. Most of what it finds will be harmless or even required.

I'm afraid something has gone terribly wrong - I followed the steps up to the point of running Malware Bytes, and a few minutes into the scan my computer automatically restarted. I tried it again and the second time it stalled and the computer restarted, but when it booted up a screen appeared stating it needed to check for disk consistency so I let it run... it went on for about a half hour and after it was finished the monitor went black.

The CPU made some moderate noises like it was thinking, but nothing appeared on the screen except the cursor. I pressed the off button and the Windows shut down screen appeared before it turned off. I turned it back on and after the usual start up screens it went straight to a black screen again.

Please let me know if there's a way to fix this, I'm not sure what could have gone wrong but again any help you can provide would be greatly appreciated!

Try this please. You will need a USB drive.

Download http://unetbootin.sourceforge.net/unetbootin-xpud-windows-latest.exe & http://noahdfear.net/downloads/bootable/xPUD/xpud-0.9.2.iso to the desktop of your clean computer

• Insert your USB drive
  
• Press Start > My Computer > right click your USB drive > choose Format > Quick format
  
• Double click the unetbootin-xpud-windows-387.exe that you just downloaded
  
• Press Run then OK
  
• Select the DiskImage option then click the browse button located on the right side of the textbox field.
  
• Browse to and select the xpud-0.9.2.iso file you downloaded
  
• Verify the correct drive letter is selected for your USB device then click OK
  
• It will install a little bootable OS on your USB device
  
• Once the files have been written to the device you will be prompted to reboot ~ do not reboot and instead just Exit the UNetbootin interface
  
• After it has completed do not choose to reboot the clean computer simply close the installer
  
• Next download http://noahdfear.net/downloads/driver.sh to your USB
  
• Remove the USB and insert it in the sick computer
  
• Boot the Sick computer
  
• Press F12 and choose to boot from the USB
  
• Follow the prompts
  
• A Welcome to xPUD screen will appear
  
• Press File
  
• Expand mnt
  
• sda1,2...usually corresponds to your HDD
  
• sdb1 is likely your USB
  
• Click on the folder that represents your USB drive (sdb1 ?)
  
• Confirm that you see driver.sh that you downloaded there
  
• Press Tool at the top
  
• Choose Open Terminal
  
• Type bash driver.sh
  
• Press Enter
  
• After it has finished a report will be located on your USB drive named report.txt
  
• Remove the USB drive and insert back in your working computer and navigate to report.txt
  
  Please note - all text entries are case sensitive

Copy and paste the report.txt for my review

I actually don't have a USB, would it be at all possible to use a blank cd instead ?

Try this please. You will still need a USB drive.

Download GETxPUD.exe to the desktop of your clean computer

• Run GETxPUD.exe
  
• A new folder will appear on the desktop.
  
• Open the GETxPUD folder and click on the get&burn.bat
  
• The program will download xpud_0.9.2.iso, and upon finished will open BurnCDCC ready to burn the image.
  
• Click on Start and follow the prompts to burn the image to a CD.
  
• Next download driver.sh to your USB drive
  
• Remove the USB & CD and insert it in the sick computer
  
• Boot the Sick computer with the CD you just burned
  
• The computer must be set to boot from the CD
  
• Gently tap F12 and choose to boot from the CD
  
• Follow the prompts
  
• A Welcome to xPUD screen will appear
  
• Press File
  
• Expand mnt
  
• sda1,2...usually corresponds to your HDD
  
• sdb1 is likely your USB
  
• Click on the folder that represents your USB drive (sdb1 ?)

I was able to get a flash drive and I followed the prompts from your 12:28 AM post; I booted the computer off the USB and found the folder mnt, but I could not find driver.sh anywhere in the folder that is my USB. I tried opening it through the terminal but it could not find it; just for grins I tried it under the second folder as well but still no luck.

I'm so sorry to be so difficult - unfortunately I'm not all that familiar with flash drives; is there a particular way I should save the file so it can recognize it in xPUD?

I did download it to the flash drive; I can see it on the flash drive on my working PC but when I follow the instructions above it does not show up under the mnt folder in xPUD

Oops I guess I should add that yes I am looking in the sda1 and sda2 folders under the mnt folder; but I can't find driver.sh anywhere.

after you boot into the usb try to remove it and stick it back in to see if you can find it then
