Can't remove search engine redirect virus - please help.

Hello,

I've been suffering from a virus that will redirect search engine links to various ad/spyware sites. It is affecting both Google and Yahoo, I haven't tried other search engines. I use Firefox as my browser. I have tried various virus removal tools to get rid of this bug, to no avail. Here's what I've done so far:

* Ran MBAM, it found no valid bugs.
* Ran Spybot S&D, it found no hits.
* Ran SUPERAnti Spware, it found some cookies, removed them.
* Ran CCLeaner, cleaned all history and fixed all Registry errors.
* Ran Hijack This, removed two O2 - BHO items that had no name. Items returned after reboot, but are gone now (I suspect due to ComboFix). Newer log below ComboFix.
* Ran ComboFix, allowed to do its thing. Log below.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated, as I am both at my wits end and plain fed up... :angry:

We apologize for the delay in responding to your request for help. Here at Bleeping Computer we get overwhelmed at times, and we are trying our best to keep up. Please note that your topic was not intentionally overlooked. Our mission is to help everyone in need, but sometimes it takes just a little longer to get to every request for help. No one is ignored here.

Please take note:

  • If you have since resolved the original problem you were having, we would appreciate you letting us know.
  • If you are unable to create a log because your computer cannot start up successfully please provide detailed information about your installed Windows Operating System including the Version, Edition and if it is a 32bit or a 64bit system.
    • If you are unsure about any of these characteristics just post what you can and we will guide you.

  • Please tell us if you have your original Windows CD/DVD available.
  • If you are unable to perform the steps we have recommended please try one more time and if unsuccessful alert us of such and we will design an alternate means of obtaining the necessary information.
  • If you have not done so, include a clear description of the problems you're having, along with any steps you may have performed so far.
  • Upon completing the steps below another staff member will review your topic an do their best to resolve your issues.
  • If you have already posted a DDS log, please do so again, as your situation may have changed.
  • Use the 'Add Reply' and add the new log to this thread.


We need to see some information about what is happening in your machine. Please perform the following scan again:

  • Download DDS by sUBs from one of the following links if you no longer have it available. Save it to your desktop.
  • Double click on the DDS icon, allow it to run.
  • A small box will open, with an explanation about the tool. No input is needed, the scan is running.
  • Notepad will open with the results.
  • Follow the instructions that pop up for posting the results.
  • Close the program window, and delete the program from your desktop.
Please note: You may have to disable any script protection running if the scan fails to run. After downloading the tool, disconnect from the internet and disable all antivirus protection. Run the scan, enable your A/V and reconnect to the internet.

We also need a new log from the GMER anti-rootkit Scanner.

Please note that if you are running a 64-bit version of Windows you will not be able to run GMER and you may skip this step.

??? uh... It would seem not... :huh:

I don't get it. I still had it after the last virus scan (ComboFix on April 30th), and I haven't done anything else since except the DDS & GMER scans yesterday. I thought DDS & GMER just gathered data, without making any changes (a la Hijack This)?

Don't get me wrong, I'm not complaining that it's gone. But, I'd like to know what I did...?

Whatever it is, the good news is that it is gone.:)

You have the latest version of Java and it is good. Older versions have vulnerabilities that malicious sites can use to exploit and infect your system.
Please uninstall the following:

Java™ 6 Update 22

Also it seems you have no antivirus protection on your computer. You need to install an antivirus program to have a proper protection. I recommend this good free antivirus:

Avira
  • Download the installer from softpedia.com link as it has a secure download mirror.
  • Install and update it then let it scan the computer and remove what it finds.
  • Copy and paste the content of the report to your reply.

OK, thank-you farbar. I do Have SUPERAntiSpyware & Spybot S&D installed, they normally stay in the background. The instructions for DDS & GMER said to disable any existing A/V before running them. Would you still suggest I get Avira?

Also, the Oracle website says that they're at Java SE 6 update 25. Should I go ahead with that one? And I presume I would want the x86 version, since I use Win XP Home, right?

SUPERAntiSpyware & Spybot S&D are antispyware software. They can be complementary but no replacement for antivirus whith real-time protection for many nasty viruses. I strongly suggest to go a head and install Avira.

Indeed the latest Java is update 25 and yes you have x86 version.
